Just some things I wanne say and find out. 'Fishing' is such a signature song for Richard don't you think? If I would try to define Richard's sociopolitical outlook, based on his work, I would say he was a religiously inspired humanist. Maybe he is nothing of the kind -- but that's how it seems to be to me. I'm not religious, but the next verse is just wonderful, and so bright: "My dad used to rent us this place in Ontario He showed us how to cast the line and tie the flies He used to say that God rewards us for letting the small ones go Maybe, but I don't know, anyway . . ." It/'s Richard's way you know, to be able to find a very subtle way of touching upon politics, without spelling it out - multiple interpretations remain possible. Now, my question....................what is going on in the last verse? "Senor, as you know, I was a fisherman How full the nets came in We hauled them up by hand But when we fled, I left them just out past the coral reefs They're waiting there for me . . . running deep . . ." I like to think that the guy is saying here: "Look, I'm not gonna talk. If I have to I'll go back where I came from. I have a place to go back to." But I'm not sure at all. What's your ideas? Paul of the Netherlands FISHING Please have a seat Sorry I'm late I know how long you've had to wait I did not forget your documents No time to waste, why not begin Here's how it works, I've got these faces You give them names, I won't deport you Make sure you face my tape recorder Make no mistake, this fountain pen Could put you on a plane by ten And by the way, your next of kin I know which house she's hiding in So now that you know whose skin you're saving In this photograph, who's this one waving I think you know, so speak up, amigo It says here by trade you were a fisherman Well I'll bet you Indians can really reel 'em in And if you get the chance You should try to get up to Lake Michigan Maybe, but then again, anyway . . . Where were we then Is he your friend I recommend you look again Where does he stay, what is his name There is no shame, he'd do the same So what do you say, I don't have all day It's up to you Which will it be, good citizen or poor campesino? My dad used to rent us this place in Ontario He showed us how to cast the line and tie the flies He used to say that God rewards us for letting the small ones go Maybe, but I don't know, anyway . . . It's easy to bite, just take the bait Don't snap the line, don't fight . . . The hook hurts less if you don't try to dive Senor, as you know, I was a fisherman How full the nets came in We hauled them up by hand But when we fled, I left them just out past the coral reefs They're waiting there for me . . . running deep . . . ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Nov 2003 07:54:47 -0600 From: "kunigunda" Subject: [RS] Re: belif-o-matic quiz Hey this quiz was kinda fun. I'm afraid I got thrown into the Unitarian Universalism bucket since I'm not sure what I believe. Taoism 63%, lowest was Jehovah's Witness 15%. I hope that means I will never be seen knocking on peoples doors handing out pamplets! I wonder what scores RS would have? Carrie in KC >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> It's available as an e-book, but I found "Appointment in Jerusalem" at the library. Being something of a Taoist, I thought reading it would be a nice way to celebrate Christmas one year, since I feel a little out of place during the Christmas season. (Actually I scored only 54% on Taoism on the Belief-o-Matic quiz at Beliefnet.com. My lowest score was Roman Catholic at 11%. My highest was secular humanist at 100% but I detest the term.) My name is Ron Alderfer, I live northwest of Philadelphia, PA - and I'm a Richard Shindell fan. There. I feel better already. I found Richard's music - like this list - quite by accident. Several years ago I was researching some female singer-songwriters that I knew very little about, and (luckily for me) I discovered Lucy Kaplansky. That led to Cry, Cry, Cry and of course, Richard. Now I'm a pretty level-headed, forty-something guy; and I don't get starry-eyed over singers and celebrities, or send fan letters. But I was taken with Richard's music immediately - the voice, the song writing, and man-oh-man, that guitar! I started collecting all of his recordings, and have listened almost non stop ever since. So far, I have all 5 of the major albums, the Sonora Sessions EP (thanks, Scott!), and hopefully soon, the Spring EP. Along with an orphan song or two. I have been lucky enough to see Richard twice so far - both acoustic shows. I have learned a lot about my favorite male singer-songwriter from this list, and I look forward to the new CD, hopefully seeing RS again, and sharing the wonder of his music with you folks!
