This was the first time we had been to the Turning Point, and it was a wonderful place to hear music in an intimate setting. The cafi is downstairs from the restaurant, and there are tables and chairs for about 60 people. The stage is small...maybe 10'x6', and only one step above the floor level. Richard came on about 6:30 and after shifting around a bit trying to get comfortable on the stool (and allowing his guitar to adjust to the temperature change) he launched into his set. I didn't take notes so the song order may be incorrect (especially the middle portion) and I may have forgotten a song...here goes: Fenario - Not sure of the spelling, nice melody and good story about a woman dreading the morning sun when her lover must head off to war. Che Guevara T-Shirt Simple Song (in Spanish) - Richard asked if anyone spoke spanish and one man in the back raised his hand. Richard said "Then I'm singing this song for you...it's a love song." So Says the Whipporwill - Richard dedicated this to Dave Carter There Goes Mavis - Richard said if you ever have trouble finishing a song just add a canary Waste Deep In The Big Muddy - Introduced with the story about the Smother's Brothers show being cancelled because they performed this song. Louisiana - Randy Newman song...Richard said "Good Old Boys" was one of his favorite albums. Arrowhead - Reunion Hill - Beautiful as always Summer Wind, Cotton Dress - Richard said it's not his wife's favorite song. Beyond the Iron Gate - Beautiful slow version...and still leaving off the last verse. Mary Magdalene - Richard talked a bit about the Da Vinci Codes and about hearing the "Cry, Cry, Cry" version of this song on TV last week as part of a show about Jesus and Mary. His manager is looking into it, but Richard said the use of the song appeared to be in context. Does anyone know what show he's referring to? Cold Missouri Water - Richard spent a few minutes earlier in the show explaing that there are five different types of requests from the audience. #5 are songs not written by him that he never performs, and so when someone requested this he said it was a #5. The woman responded that her 10 year old son (in the audience) wanted to hear it, and Richard said "Oh, you played the trump card". He did a heartfelt version of the song with only two minor missteps. BTW, #1 in the request pecking order is new songs...Richard said he will ALWAYS play a new song if it's requested. The Island - by request Are You Happy Now? - He reversed verses 2 & 3, but didn't miss a beat. Fishing Transit (final song of the set) Last Fare of the Day (encore - it was also requested early in the show) - He explained this song as taking place in fht fall of 2001 and the spring of 2002. This is the first time I've heard him mention a specific timeframe for this song, and listening to it in the context of those dates makes me wonder if it may be about 9/11. The show ended about 8:30. Before playing Transit Richard announced that this was the last show of the tour. He was heading to the airport the next morning (Monday) to fly back home to Argentina. He said the new album was finished, and that it was "really different" with lots of unusual instruments. He said the album should be out in March. Hope the post wasn't too long, and please feel free to correct me if I mixed up the song order a bit or left anything out. I was watching this with my daughter and said that Richard's song would go so well with this special. And just like that, when the show came back from commercial, there it was! It was Dar singing, the Cry3 version!!! I was so excited but by then my daughter left and I had no one to share it with, so I posted to the list! I was wondering if they got Richard's persmission to use it! It was very fitting, if only they played more of it. Kane" Subject: [RS] Turning Point Show Hi folks This is a second attempt to send out Richards set list from the show. ( thanks for the extra help Ron) I was looking forward to hearing all of Richards new songs last night but he did not play Grey green. He played one I hadnt heard discussed before, "The Island" He seemed to be very relaxed and he was, as always very humorous. The set list: 1. Fenario 2. Che guevara T-shirt 3. Cancion Sencilla 4. So says the whippoorwill 5. there goes Mavis 6. Waist deep in the big muddy 7. Louisiana 1927 8. Arrowhead 9. Summer wind, cotton dress 10. Reunion Hill 11. Mary Magdellin 12. The Island 13. Beyond the iron gate 14. Fishing 15. Are you happy now? 16 Cold Missouri Water ( This was a request from the crowd and we were all pleasantly surprised that he did it! 17. Transit 18. Last fare of the day He didnt announce the song "The Island" so I assumed it was grey green and kept waiting for a chorus with those words. I was so pre-occupied that I forgot to really listen to the song, thus blowing my chance to give a first time account of a new song to this group. While I was looking forward to hearing grey green especially since it was raved about on this list, hearing Cold Missouri Waters live was a major bonus and I'll have oppurtunites galore to hear Grey Green next year. Sure hope this one posts! BTW, having seen three RS shows in the last couple of weeks, including last night, I've noticed something interesting: all of the new songs except "Last Fare of the Day" are in DADGAD. Well, *I* think it's interesting, since I'm an alternate tuning dweeb. RG, heading out to Oregon on Wednesday for a couple of Tracy Grammer shows . . . including Saturday's in Portland, where she'll be playing with a full band. Yowza. Sure hope this one posts! Yowza. <<< A couple??? Does this mean you are planning on coming south for Friday's show in Eugene??? Or are you on your way to Alaska ;~) (feel free to answer off list) ~ We are mighty parched for a Richard show, being as he's only been out here to Oregon once in the past three years. Thankfully other great shoes do pass through ~ Mark Erelli & Natalie MacMaster next week (not together), Ellis & Vance in 3 weeks (together), and when Tracy comes home, it is always . . . Yowza!! The wife and I both came down with nasty colds and unfortunately had to miss the show. I was worried that I had lost the reservation earlier this week when I called to pay for the seats, since there were less than 7 days before the show. As it turns out the seats went unused. " John, your seats definitely did not go unused. The show at the Turning Point was sold out (as procrastinating me, sent to stand in the SRO section can attest to). It was a great show. This is the first time that I have seen RS in such an intimate setting and he seemed much more relaxed than I've ever seen him before. It appeared that he was having a great time up there and, as mentioned in previous reviews, he was very communicative. The playlist: - -Fenario - -Che Guevaro T- Shirt - -Cancion Sencilla - -Whipperwill ( last verse dedicated to Dave Carter) - -There Goes Mavis - Richard related that this song,"just wasn't happening" until his daughter reminded him that he promised to buy an orange canary as a campanion to her canary Ernesto ( Che for short). " This is going nowhere, I'm just going to put a canary in this song" - -Waist Deep in the Big Muddy - -I didn't catch the name of this next song -A cover of a Randy Newman song??? - Ron G. Can you help me on this? - -Arrowhead - -A Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress _ " I had a lot of explaining to do after I wrote this" - -Reunion Hill - -The Ballad of Mary Magdalen - -The Island - -Beyond the Iron Gate ( Slow version) - -Fishing - -AYHN - -Cold Missouri Waters - This one was a request Richard discribed as a fifth level request," Old songs, I didn't write , that I don't do anymore" The requester pleaded that it was for her 10 year old son with her that night. Richard responded,"Ohhh, the trump card... Do you want me to play it in tune? - -Transit - -Encore -Last Fare of the Day A really wonderful show, that had me hankering for more. Can't wait until his return. If I understood correctly, I believe he mentioned that the new estimated release date for his CD is March. Hope you and your wife feel better.
