The answer was the number 49, that being the number of months between original Richard Shindell CDs, considering that he expected to release hix next CD in February. Then, Ron G. posted: >>He did say, however, that the original plan for an early February release >>might get pushed back a bit. << So, allow me to modify my riddle: What do Roswell, NM, Bobby Thomson and Ralph Branca, Dick Butkus, Richard Shindell, and potentially Puerto Rico have in common? We attended two Richard shows in the past week or so, the 92nd St. Y and the Brokerage. I love watching songs change as they develop, wondering what the 'final' version will be, knowing all the time that the recorded version will not likely be the final version, given Richard's penchant for tweaking songs over the years. Of the changes he has made to the new ones, his addition of the 'luna luna luna llena' verse at the end of 'Che Guevera T-Shirt' is wonderful, and works great. There are a few words that have changed here and there, in 'Wippoorwill' and 'Last Fare,' but nothing huge, like adding a third act to 'Transit.' Re: 'Last Fare of the Day.' This song has grabbed me like nothing Richard has done before. I think I have heard it six or seven times now, and it pops up in my head at least a few times each day. When the woman in the cab, referring to the radio talk show, says "I could not bear another word," well, that demonstrates Richard's eye and ear for detail just perfectly. On his chords page, Ron G. refers to this one as "an instant Shindell classic," and I could not agree more. Having to wait five more months for a recording of this song is almost as bad as being held in Dade County for six weeks without a lawyer. Jesus' mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine." John 2.7 Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. John 2.8 Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Matt. 8.20 Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." I don't see where the speculation comes from. You can't be a guest at your own wedding, and a man provides a home for his wife. RS content- did anyone make the Oct. 31st Towne Crier show? Some of us unlucky souls in the Midwestern wasteland don't even get to hear it live! Perhaps Carrie (though I've yet to meet her) and I will plan a field trip. I admire Richard for his unprolific ways. He obviously has high standards. I can't tell you how many times I've bought albums and been disappointed to find the obligatory two gems and eight to ten fillers. I had never been particularly comfortable with the song's somewhat abrupt ending, and this is a wonderful and appropriate wrap-up. >> There are a few words that have changed here and there, in 'Wippoorwill' << Yeah, minor stuff. The word "snickering" in the line "Beneath the constant snickering of the devil that I know" has become "whispering" to (in RS's words) tie in better with the word "whippoorwill." >> Having to wait five more months for a recording of this song is almost as bad as being held in Dade County for six weeks without a lawyer. << Not that bad, actually. Trust me. ;-) RG, ready for Sunday's show at The Turning Point. ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V5 #242 ***********************************
