I know there is a compilation of what will be on the next record on this list. Since Shindell is known for a couple covers on every album(well that is on "Reunion Hill", "The Courier" and "Somewhere Near Patterson"), I think the Seeger and Newman covers may make it. I heard them both - both are great and uniquely done, esp. the Seeger cover. he also seems to be playing them alot as well. I sent this message this morning from a different account and it doesn't appear to have gone through. Well, Richard did another fantastic set at the Towne Crier last night. The opener was Garrin Benfield, who happened to be an almost-native (he's from just over the Westchester border in Katonah). I enjoyed his set - nice harmonies and some really fun work with delay loops on his acoustic - but I was way too pumped about seeing Richard to really get into his extremely mellow sound. This Halloween gig is becoming something of a tradition, and Richard certainly didn't disappoint. He was in rare form - seemed even more relaxed, intimate and spontaneous than normal, just as other folks have described from recent gigs. He opened the show by strolling onstage, walking up to the mike and saying, "Boo!" (In fact, if I remember correctly he did this same schtick last year, but we won't fault him just because I'm a geeky uber-fan with a long memory.) I loved that he was very communicative...lots of stories about the new material besides the usual pithy Richard one-liners. The intro to 'Cancion' was particularly funny. After "Don Ricardo" - I swear, this is what he says he's called at home - discovered that only one person in the audience *really* spoke Spanish (welcome to rich white Westchester, buddy!) he turned to the gentleman and said, "Well, then this one's for you! It's a love song - I hope you don't mind. We're still cool, right?" And so on. The set list was pretty much what people have been describing: Fenario Che Guevara T-shirt Cancion Sencilla Waist Deep in the Big Muddy (our man Mr. Seeger) There Goes Mavis Whipoorwill Arrowhead Reunion Hill Beyond the Iron Gate A Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress The Hobo Song (by Jack Bonus - Old and In the Way recorded this one) Fishing Last Fare of the Day Transit 1st encore: Are You Happy Now? 2nd encore: Nora I was a little bummed not to get 'Gray/Green', 'Before You Go' or 'The Island' - but let's not be too greedy. One of the best 'Reunion Hill's I've heard - intense and intimate. He did the slow tempo 'Iron Gate' with no explanation, just a "wait till you hear this". 'The Hobo Song' was a pretty sweet surprise and seemed to be an on-the-spot setlist addition. I suspected that AYHN would be the first encore because of the Halloween bit. This was a fun rendition and it got a great crowd response as always, but Richard did have a slight air of resignation while playing it - - I'm sure it does get a bit old for him. 'Nora' was another treat - just about as passionately sung and played as I've ever heard it. After the final encore he came out for a meet-and-greet. I give him a ton of credit; he's always so gracious about giving his fans face-time, even after a long performance. I pulled my usual lame-ass stunt of lurking until the crowd had thinned. Richard indulged me in a lovely conversation about music, politics, labor unions, grammar, American education and NY Metro area pizza joints. God bless his heart (and his good politics)! Just in case I wasn't already jonesing for the new album...all in all, a damn near flawless evening. Bart, I almost forgot this. The poet that Richard shamelessly plundered was John Donne.
