With Richard's CD playing I almost felt like I was there! Since I'm out in Sacramento that may be the closest I get to a RS concert this year! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 01 Nov 2003 03:24:12 -0500 From: B Gallagher Subject: [RS] Brokerage, Long Island 10/29/03 What a great solo Shindell show at the Brokerage, an intimate comedy/music club on Long Island's south shore. Our own Bob Westcott opened with several fine fingerstyle tunes. Bob had us singing along with Toby Walker's "on-line religion, GOD.com" Gimme t'at old time religion. Expatriate Richard came on with six new songs in a row, seven if you count "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy", a Pete Seeger song that RS has just adopted. Isn't folk music great; this one still timely, unfortunately. He also did a fine version of Randy Newman's "Louisiana 1927", which has been done by several, including Marcia Ball. I do like Marcia's too. Fenario is just outstanding. Based on an old Scot melody. Driving guitar. On stage Richard said he lifted the final verse verbatim from English literature. Dunn? (Help me somebody). Speaking with Richard after the show he again marveled at how he just came across the final verse. I asked if he had written the song around that verse, it fit so perfectly, but he insisted he had the song done - words and music, except for the last verse. Pure serendipity, I remarked. "Reunion Hill", fantastic. He placed his head on the rosewood upper bout of his new Lowden cutaway, soaking in the overtones. He was clearly comfortable; as if he were playing at home. "Beyond the Iron Gate" was awesome. Done slowly, the way he said it was written. Richard joked he had previously "speeded it up, because I wanted to." To laughs. Being around Halloween, one expected, some demanded, "Are You Happy Now" - clearly a crowd favorite. And why not? Richard had fun with an over-the-top rendition. I joked that I had never heard "you took the candy with you too" sung with such meaning. Richard appears to be self conscious of having "AYHN" be his defining song. He doesn't have anything to worry about. He has written so many other good songs. One of my favorites will always be Arrowhead. "I Got Mine" is a Blind Blake rag, arranged by Roy Bookbinder. Nice guitar work. "Last Fare" is another relatively new one romanticizing the taxi driver. Man, he can probably make pushing a broom sound fantastic ...wait a minute...!
