I just picked up the new Willy Porter live CD, "High Wire". (Just released on 09/09.) It is fabulous, I highly recommend it. This was my first taste of Porter, as I have been told by friends that he is incredible live but his studio recordings don't possess the same fire and aren't as good. Maybe it's odd to bring this up on the Shindell listserv, since WP's style is very different from RS's--frenetic and soulful compared to RS's stately and resonant songwriting--but boy, is he ever good. (He plays a MEAN guitar, too. Whew.) The CD includes a highly charged, yet very faithful, cover of "You Stay Here". Two thumbs up from me. - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Sep 2003 08:19:12 -0400 From: Jim Colbert Subject: [RS] definitive cover songs >It's not just the songs themselves. It's R's interpretation of them. I've heard the original versions, and (I'm sure Richard would disagree, but...) they don't compare to R's versions. > >Am I crazy, or does anyone else feel that way? > > > I agree that Richard's takes are the definitive versions of each- I've always liked the solo version of CMM best- and for the record, I am a big Keelaghan fan and have, far as I know, all the recorded versions of SDR to compare- Keen (2x), Kottke, Russell, and Michael Martin Murphy. (Hey, if anyone knows of any others lemme know- I love cowboy and gunfighter songs...) I also love richard's solo take on shades of gray when he gets flatpick happy... It was also my first RS performance as well as the first concert for my daughter. Been a fan of both ever since. So, discussing WP here does sort of make sense. - -----Mike <<<<<<<<< From: rfoxwell@wso.williams.edu Date: Thu Sep 11 10:35:58 2003 Subj: Willy Porter I haven't seen anything mentioned about this, so in the spirit of discussing other quality folk artists, here goes... Haven't been able to find the new Kris yet over here - hope I will soon. Haven't heard the new Joan Baez either. Have you?
