Speaking of coal miners and bluegrass, Ricky Skaggs has an awesome tune on his album Ancient Tones called Coal Minin' Man. Also, I highly recommend Patty Loveless' Mountain Soul (I think, not having the cd nearby). But even she and Dolly call their latest efforts "mountain music" rather than "bluegrass;" onward goes the debate about defining bluegrass. I've seen a few people mention that "richard must not like the mid-west". If he does not tour there very often, it may be just the opposite happening in that he doesn't have a strong enough fan base in the mid-west to warrant a show every tour. So the first step would be to talk to the promoter, see if he's presented Richard before, see how the show did and if he'd consider having him back. Then it'd have to fit into the routing for a tour, promoter will have to have the right budget for the show, etc I've noticed that all the performers who do well there are either bluegrass or country-based, and they all probably do well because the promoter knows there's an audience for it. If not, then treat yourself to a little road trip or plane ticket to go see some great music! Good luck Jennifer > R must not like the midwest. See, there's the very real possibility that I'll be moving to San Diego by spring, and outside of my concern that one of the days California is going to slide into the ocean (like the mystics and statistics say it will), I'm also concerned about the lack of a good folk scene there. The Belly Up Tavern and Java Joe's are the only places I've heard of, and in looking at the tour schedules of Richard and Tracy and all the other folks I love, San Diego is not often on their itineraries. So it does seem like it might be a catch-22-and-egg situation. Do they not go because there's no audience, or is there no audience because they don't go? Guess I'll have to go out there and find a place and start promoting shows my own bad self. It just never seems to work. With his restricted tour schedule he doesn't swing through here quite as possible. But trust me when I say we are definitely trying!!! I'm dying to have him here again as well! - -Kristen > > R must not like the midwest. That means that he *has* to (for the most part) go where the money is, to where his draw is almost guaranteed. He is demanding more these days, money-wise, which means that some promoters -- especially those in markets in which he hasn't already established an audience -- are going to balk at the guarantees his management is asking for. Richard is at the stage in his career at which he (nor his management) is not likely as willing to sacrifice the payoff financially in order to establish an audience. I've always thought that he's made fairly regular swings through the midwest, although the "midwest" seems to consist of about half of the fifty states. I asked his agent recently what his tour plans were for the coming year and she didn't know for sure what the plans were.
