I have seen Kris in a couple workshops in folk festivals and she never did that much for me, then again I seem to not like most artists linked with Richard Shindell with the exception of Dar and with her I only like the early stuff. :) - -Adam - --- RockinRonD@aol.com wrote: > In a message dated 8/31/2003 4:56:24 AM Eastern > Standard Time, RonG responds: > > >>> if an artist makes the exact type of music I > love, why wouldn't I WANT to > > hear CD after CD of that type of material? Does anyone know why Dar included "O Canada Girls" only on a limited edition of The Green World? That song seems to hark back to the early Dar. And--here's my RS content--does he hate the Midwest? I wouldn't blame him, since I certainly do. It seems all his tour dates are on the east or west coast. Stuck in the Midwest for 26 years (but visiting glorious San Francisco in two weeks), Donna PS: Shindell fan in SF: lost your email when my computer died on August 10th. Please email me again. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2003 11:00:06 EDT From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] More of the Same << And--here's my RS content--does he hate the Midwest? Hopefully the fall tour will be expanded to include something west of the Delaware Water Gap. HEy look at this list-liking Richard doesnt mean you like Dar...or visa versa.. as long as ROND keeps showing up at dar shows and buying her cds.. its okay with me that he wants the throw back to the 90s.. i just dont want the same record over and over .. if i did the same work over and over for 20 years.. id be putitng to cogs together at a factory and pretty bored.. sharonG - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MSN 8: Get 6 months for $9.95/month. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2003 13:16:01 EDT From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] kris and gillian >> its not their voice or choice of instruments ( Kris also plays fiddle-Gillian plays bango).its that these two women are not a three chord guitar girl but more than that, they are the among a small group writing post modern current day bluegrass music << Well, I think anyone within spitting distance of the Grand Old Opry would tell you that Kris Delmhorst has about as much in common with current-day bluegrass music -- post modern or not -- as Mariah Carey does. But I digress. Without turning this into the Kris/Gillian list -- and with a plea that we stay away from any of the Dar-bashing that occasionally permeates this place -- the only similarity I see, ironically, is that they are sooooo different from almost everyone else out there. There's that "whiny chick with guitar" Respond crew that I unfortunately find to be almost indistinguishable from each other, and you certainly can't hear Kris, Gillian or Julie Miller and get them confused with anyone else. Well, you might confuse Julie Miller with Cyndi Lauper & Betty Boop's love child, but that's about all. >> if i did the same work over and over for 20 years.. id be putitng to cogs together at a factory and pretty bored.. >> Well, ya see, I pretty much HAVE been doing the same job for over 20 years. I loved what I was doing then, and I love what I'm doing now. When someone asks if I've gotten bored, or feel the need to grow and change and try something different, if for no other reason than the simple fact of trying something different, my answer is always the same: "Um, no." There have been times when I loved my job so much that if I'd won seven hundred billion zillion dollars in the lottery, I'd have stayed working. Although with, perhaps, a nicer car. And more guitars. In fact, I'd now own all of Richard's ex-guitars. ;-) RG ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2003 14:10:38 -0400 From: Tom Neff Subject: Re: [RS] kris and gillian - --On Sunday, August 31, 2003 1:16 PM -0400 Rongrittz@aol.com wrote: >>> its not their voice or choice of instruments ( Kris also plays > fiddle-Gillian plays bango).its that these two women are not a three > chord guitar girl but more than that, they are the among a small group > writing post modern current day bluegrass music << > > Well, I think anyone within spitting distance of the Grand Old Opry would > tell you that Kris Delmhorst has about as much in common with current-day > bluegrass music -- post modern or not -- as Mariah Carey does. But I > digress. I think you also transgress. :) Kris can definitely play bluegrass - she won at Telluride in 2001 if I remember right. Modern bluegrass music is not the Grand Ole Opry. It's going in several directions, and Kris has the chops for more than one of them. Another female "fusiongrass" talent to reckon with is Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem. Gillian is one notch up. I used to be annoyed at her designer-hillbilly shtick but she is a great songwriter. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2003 13:06:38 -0700 (PDT) From: adam plunkett Subject: Re: [RS] kris and gillian Can someone identify a good definition of bluegrass? :) When I think bluegrass, I think of Vassar Clemets and Northern Lights. If I were to catogorize Gillian Welch I would say country-traditional-folk. Or "new music that sounds like old traditional songs". And I mean that in a good way. I agree, she is an amazing songwriter. As for Delmhorst, bluegrass doesn't come to mind but, then again, all I know her is playinga few songs live and hearing the studio version of "Weatherman".
