I got to see them perform in NYC last week at Makor, with Erik Balkey, Andy and Denise, and CC Railroad. If you aren't familiar with these other artists, please do check them out. You'll be glad you did. A most incredible show, start to finish. We're About 9 encored with "Money For Floods" and it was chilling, to say the least. I have officially jumped on this bandwagon. Very nice people, too! I'll save RG the embarrassment of plugging his own webpage: just such a resource is available on the web, provided by the listserv's very own Ron Grittz. There you can find the lyrics (and chords) to all of Shindell's songs, including all of the new ones that I am aware of. Check it out here: http://members.aol.com/rongrittz/page2/shindell.htm (Thanks Ron!) - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Aug 2003 13:43:36 -0400 From: "Gene Frey" Subject: [RS] But wait, there's more Hey you guys, The old original RG, a.k.a. legendary bluesman Slim Jim DADGAD, listed the potential songs for the new CD as follows: I Am Before You Go Hideous Grin Ocean View The Island Che Guevara T-Shirt Grey/Green The Last Fare of the Day Marching to Fenario So Says the Wippoorwill Farewell to St. Dolores There is one he was playing last year, a bleak city-based tune about drug addicts/addiction which, I have seen referred to both on this list and in a review, as 'State of the Union.' I remember him playing it just once, perhaps at the Emelin or the Outpost in the Burbs, and I do remember noting that it seemed to be, shall we say, in the development stages. However, I don't remember 'Ocean View.' Are they, perhaps, the same song? Also, it might be a nice treat to find one (if not both) of the two Paul Simon covers Richard had been doing (America and Bleecker Street) on the new disc. Call it a lagniappe for the fans who came out to see the shows over the past few years. No artist speaks to everyone and there is no need for comparison. I have repeatedly said how much Dar has meant to me. Being approximately the same age, we seem to hit the same experiences at the same time. She speaks to me on every level. I am never bored by her patter and frankly I really don't feel its self-absorbed. She is often self-deprecating and also sends love to the audience and thanks so many people for helping her. I also, always enjoy what Richard has to say, no matter his mood. His dry wit is great whether he happy or cranky. On the other hand, there is another artist we all know and love, that I don't see every time she comes to town because I can't hear her repeat the same stories, word for word, again and again. Maybe its just cause my grandmother does this.... It is hard to pick a favorite RS song. Tops for me are Fleur dy Lys, Confession, Ascent, You Stay Here, You Again, etc. I would have to say that Fishing is the song that floors me every time, especially live. I think its because the fisherman, listens to all this manipulative crap and just ignores it. He stays absolutely true to himself and loyal to his friends. Nothing the INS agent offers or threatens is an even trade for his honor and his faith. Well, that's the way I hear it, and it moves me every time. Oh and I love Lazy too. I think this song really captures a lovely moment perfectly. So in love you just don't feel like doing another thing but being with that person. Who wouldn't want to feel like that? I don't really get people not liking this song. It's un-American ;-).
