But among them what's already writ: "Blue TV Light" is my pet #1 just as a pure song. (Now try to get him to play it, arggh) For overall presentation & impact on an album, I'll never get over the opening track "The Next Best Western" on the album "Reunion Hill." We got that disc from RS at the Newport festival and put it in the car player just as we were settling back into a quiet, air-conditioned drive home through the green summer woods of Rhode Island, after a day of loud music and hot sun. The match of mood and sound made for a moment I'll never forget. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Aug 2003 12:18:08 EDT From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] Favorite song >> I am an "easy Richard worshipper!" :) so my favorite song is usually the next one he's writing. << Gotta agree. I never thought I'd be able to say that a guy who's written some of my favorite songs of all time ("Courier," "Wisteria," "Blue Divide") could still be turning out material as incredible as "Che Guevara T-Shirt," "Last Fare of the Day" and "So Says the Whippoorwill" (btw, the chords for all three are up on my site). Whereas I don't think I've listened to Dar's last CD since the week it came out; I'm still more likely to listen to "The Honesty Room" than anything else she's done since. I understand what people say about the direction her music's taken, but surely even an old-school Darhead would have to enjoy "The One Who Knows." A few of us mentioned that very thing the other night: the new album has "The One Who Knows," while "Green World" has "After All." Both perfect for us old-schoolers . . . (Kind of like your favorite Hank Williams song--it's the last one you heard.) But among my favorites would be Sparrows Point, Courier, You Stay Here, Money for Floods, and of course Fishing. I haven't heard his unrecorded songs. How about the most disliked Shindell song? (Not the nicest thread, I know, but I'm feeling kind of Texan today.) (Not the nicest thread, I know, > but I'm feeling kind of Texan today.) Least favorite songs, huh? I can't really say that I actively dislike any of Shindell's songs, as in "oh, lord, not THAT again". My strongest negative reaction is one of apathy, in that the songs don't really do anything special for me. Such songs include "The Weather", "My Love Will Follow You", and "Memory of You." However, Shindell does have several songs that I would really really like if it weren't for one small nagging thing, a lyric or something that sticks out like a sore thumb to me. "Confession" is one such song: it's a great premise, awesome music, very clever, but the refrain "Hey doc, how's about a refill?" just kind of makes me wince. I don't know, it just irks me somehow. Similarly, the last line of the chorus in "May"--"but you've got to be strong when you're a fugitive's wife"--just seems really over-obvious and heavyhanded to me. It's a very pretty and somber song, I like it a lot, but when that line comes along I feel like the point is being driven in with a sledgehammer. (Of course, the reason that such small aspects of otherwise great songs get to me is that all of Shindell's other songs are so magnificent. It is only in comparison to the superb modesty (for lack of a better term) of "Wisteria", "Arrowhead", and "Reunion Hill", and the appropriate bluntness of that king of songs "Fishing", that the above songs seem a tad bit lacking.) - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Aug 2003 15:49:20 EDT From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] Favorite song >> How about the most disliked Shindell song? << Although each CD has songs that don't do much for me, such as "Memory of You," "Lazy" and "Abuelita" (I'm not even going to count "Merrit Parkway, 2am"), the one I dislike so much that I actually don't think I've ever been able to listen all the way through is "Smiling." But still, a "bad" Richard song is still better than 99% of what else is out there. Anyway, with "So Says the Whippoorwill," you think we've got just about enough for a new CD, if he records everything that's been written or performed since "SNP?" I agree! The first time I saw RS play, which was early in April, I was stunned at how smooth a player he is. He opened with Courier, which seems to be his typical opener, and I was blown away by his guitar skills. I was prepared for this when I saw him on 7/30, but it still wowed me, especially when he opened up on a rousing instrumental country/pickin' tune to start his encore. - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Aug 2003 00:01:53 GMT From: ptpowerlists@juno.com Subject: [RS] "Fishing" / New CD While on the road to Falcon Ridge last week, I brought up with my road buddies (Susan, Nicole & Mosh) an aspect of "Fishing" that I don't recall has ever been discussed here. The details of Richard's writing are what makes him a genius in my mind, and in "Fishing", it is the way in which the INS agent says "campesino". Considering that Richard is fairly fluent in Spanish (and has been for some time, I think), *he* would have known better to pronounce the word, COM-pay-SEE-no instead of CAM-pay-SEE-no, which is how the INS agent -- possibly trying to get the goat of the illegal alien -- pronounces it, thereby illustrating his insensitivity and giving us further reason not to like him. There is a certain arrogance that comes across when someone who doesn't really know a language tries speaking it, intermingling it with English. I'm of a mind that "I Am" *might* make it on the record, but that it's not likely; It's my guess that "Before You Go" won't be included.
