My complaints about her music aside, Dar has never struck me as an egotist. Quite the opposite, almost as though she's uncomfortable with celebrity. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2003 10:10:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Elizabeth Subject: RE: [RS] FR etc. Rongrittz@aol.com wrote: >> Hey, so what's everyone's favorite Richard song? I think I *would* be obsessed with "Last Fare of the Day," if only I could hear it more than once. I absolutely loved it when I heard Richard in Ashland several months ago, and I've been fondly--if a bit vaguely--recalling it ever since. I really, really look forward to having it on a CD so that I can properly obsess over it. As it is, the RS album I bought most recently was The Blue Divide, so I'm a bit obsessed with "The Things That I Have Seen" and "Tune for Nowhere." Wasn't Falcon Ridge glorious this year? I've been going for a while now - it's one of those weekends people in my life have learned to avoid scheduling conflicts with. But last year was so so sad. The lineup this year was fabulous and it thrilled me to the core to hear so many artists doing Dave songs. Wasn't it great to hear so many of Richard's newer songs? I swear, everything that man does is art. And to add my voice to the fray: I honestly didn't pick up on any Dar-slighting-Richard undertones...doesn't mean it didn't happen, just escaped me. But I must admit that in my conspiracy-minded soul I wonder if something went awry. I mean, 2001 was the last FRFF that all three Cry-ers played, and they spent a lot of time onstage together. Every time they were all in a workshop it'd turn into a Cry3 reunion. That was the last time I've heard of any interaction between Dar and the other two. Makes you wonder...but I probably won't lose sleep over it. Also, if yes, is there any trading that goes on of his live stuff? I would love to trade some stuff for a live CD - especially for a CD that has "Last Fare of the Day" on it (which I've never heard but apparently is an incredible new song...) Forgive me if this question has been discussed, summarily dismissed or otherwise dealt with in some way shape or form already :-) Couldn't find anything on his website... I'll be seeing Shindell at the Boston Folk Festival in "late September"; hopefully he'll play even more new tunes. - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2003 12:13:30 -0700 (PDT) From: adam plunkett Subject: Re: [RS] July 30th at Club Passim, 10PM show Well the details get foggy and I did listen to the end of show one from outside so maybe I heard "Wisteria" then..I heard it somewhere!! - --- rfoxwell@wso.williams.edu wrote: > Hello all, this is my first contribution to this > listserver. She named Kris and Daisy Mayhem and couldnt remember Josh Ritter but She remembered the 4th which i dont remember. Dar was nothing but complimentary to Jimmy Olson and the work he does with signature sounds.. the label of Richard Shindell.. i saw richard on the workshop stages and the end of his mainstage set.. The new songshe did were great.. Richard's songwriting is supurb as usual. He didnt sing the song about the hotel on the west coast. He and tracy played alot together..not unlike the Joan tour. I am not sure why the Richard list occasionally becomes the SLAM DAR list.. sharon - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. I was just EQ'ing this for the webcast, so here's what Dar said. "...You know who's here, is one of the inspirations of this song, Jimmy Olsen, also known as Jim Olsen, also known as the head of Signature Sounds, and it's amazing what a great record company he has started up, and they are just going strong with some wonderful recordings that are out: Daisy Mayhem, Kris Delmhorst, Richard Shindell, and who was the fourth person in that ad... Josh Ritter! Hello! OK, it's like a home run. So anyway, I want to thank Jim Olsen for everything he's done, those are some really great strong musical careers that are growing and flourishing in our community..." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2003 15:59:48 -0400 From: rfoxwell@wso.williams.edu Subject: [RS] FR etc. Regarding my favorite RS songs: There are so many, it's hard to pick one. It depends on my mood. Consistently, though, I find "Fishing" and "Transit" (both from "Courier") popping up on my "must hear" RS lists. The live version of Fishing was the song that really hooked me, extremely bad pun intended; it was the song that made me drop everything and marvel at RS's songwriting brilliance. "Now that you know whose skin you're saving / In this photograph, who's this one waving"...that sends a chill up my spine every time. It's such a powerful song. In Transit, I am just blown away by the imagery and symbolism. The contrast of the religious hell/heaven associations in each half of the song is inspired. "The merge from the turnpike was murder"; "the rest were just touchy as hell"; "a well-insured horde hell-bent on Saturday"; "by then it was devil may care"; the religious implications of "sheep to the slaughter"...then, in the second half, "she said a quick prayer", "thank God the traffic was light", "the light of forgiveness", the salvation at the end. I love the thematic progression, the overall contrast being made. In my opinion, "Transit", above all of RS's other songs, conveys RS's lyrical command and ability to imbue a simple song with all the symbolism of a parable. Plus, there is simply no lyric that is cooler than "Law and decorum constraining nary a one." That floors me. :-) ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V5 #157 ***********************************
