Doesn't appear so, I wonder why, is it because > it's not an original. Great song. It definately is a great song, and as far as I know there are no studio versions of it. I'd love to know more about the history of the song itself. I love a lot of those gunfighter and cowboy songs. There are recorded versions of it by, far as I know, Richard, Robert Earl Keen (live and studio), Tom Russell, Leo Kottke and Michael Martin Murphy. They say Gorka used to do it live but I've never heard that. (I know at least two Taylor-playing folkies on the list that have been known to play it live, too...) Jim Colbert ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 12:41:58 EDT From: PhilipASB@aol.com Subject: [RS] English Influences I read lots of good stuff about Richard's influences, but everyone seems to overlook how much English writers and performers have played a part in the development of his music. I guess I'm touchy on this subject as I'm a Richard fan based over here in sunny England. When I spoke to him after his show with Lucy K at Owings Mills, MD, he talked a lot about people like Richard Thompson, Kate Rusby, Martin Carthy and especially the peerless Nic Jones. The English folk tradition resonates in much of Richard's music, so I was wondering whether anyone out there has heard him mention any of his other influences from this side of the ocean. I'd also thoroughly recommend the above named artists, along with a list of others too long to type (OK then, start with June Tabor, Eliza Carthy, Ralph McTell, Dave Burland and just keep going.........). Scott notified me a few days ago that my guitar was to arrive today. You have to realize that my students (we're a really close bunch) have shared my enthusiasm over the guitar and have been awaiting this day with me for quite a while. In particular two girls Jess and Heather who are twins (one plays guitar - the other piano)(I think I mentioned previously I teach both) So I had just sat down for my first cup of coffee when there's a knock on the door. I open it to reveal two beautiful, beaming identical faces (they look just like deer, these two) saying "We came to wait with you!" So we drag the keyboard and the guitars out on the deck. Make popcorn and brownies. (This is standard procedure when you come to my house for lessons.) Instructed my dog, Taktani (which is Lenape for 'I DON"T KNOW!) to Bark three times for U-P-S when she sees the truck coming and proceeded to do lessons and just generally play around. So Jess was wailing out Mozart's Sonata in C when all of a sudden Heather very calmly says, Hey Shelley, Uh, Shelley, don't look now but there's a snake dangling off the roof (Which was directly behind me and not too far above.) Now you have to realize the nature of our constant kidding around so no way was I gonna fall for that one. She's like, "Really. Snake." I'm sayin' "Give it up I'm not looking." When all of a sudden I feel this strange sensation on my left shoulder and damn if it wasn't a little garter snake, scared shitless, which proceeded to slithery slide down my chest, onto my leg, and down onto the deck - straight across and off the edge onto the ground twelve feet below (no injury, luckily) on across the yard and into the stream. I realized immediately that the little guy was trying to tell me something. By now it was about 2:00 P.M. Lots of barks from Taktani throughout the day but never three consecutively. We're sure about this as we counted each time. So knowing how confused these UPS guys get in my neighborhood I thought I'd better check on the guitar. I go to the website, plug in the tracking number and sure enough it read "status - exception - no address found". I look at Heather. Heather looks at Jess. Jess Looks at me. Taktani barks. Once. Call UPS. The guy says he'll notify the supervisor who will get back to me within the hour. Two hours later. Call UPS. Get some guy in Utah who says he won't give me the number for the Stroudsburg store (which is near me) because all numbers are unlisted - everything's email. At this point I'm emphatic, explaining that this is not garden shears from ebay but a very expensive irreplaceable, etc etc. and there's gonna be trouble if it's not in my hands before you guys knock off for the day because I don't want it banged around in some storeroom etc etc. I really was very emphatic and it must have sunk in because within ten minutes I get a call from the Stroudsburg person, who says she thinks it might have been put on the wrong truck this morning. "Oh, Really. Hmm. Excuse me could you just call your driver and see whether it's on the truck." "Well, we have to wait until he gets to a phone and calls us." "Really. Excuse me, but you're a delivery service. No cell phones? Car phones. Whatever." "No." So I'm upset. Give her the garden shears spiel. By this time my afternoon lessons are about to arrive and I'm not feeling at all up to it and was about to cancel and drive in to the damn store myself when my first lesson, Jeremiah, comes. Jer's dad, Dennis, is with him. I love Dennis. Big, sweet, emotional guy. Great friend. You guys know John Belushi? Dead ringer for Dennis. Looks and personality. He sees I'm upset, delivers a dissertation on how he knows every UPS delivery guy in the area and says, "You stay here. I'll go look for your guitar" (There's a sequel for Richard) Damn if he wasn't back in half an hour (not nearly enough time to get to Stroudsburg and back.) Walks in the door absolutely BEAMING with a large Taylor box in his hand. "Got it." He saw the UPS truck driving down 209, pulled up alongside and honked like hell until it pulled over (He knew the driver) and damn if it wasn't the truck with my guitar. I gave him the biggest hug I think I've given anyone in a while and fed him brownies, beer and fried chicken. (Tried to talk him into the tofu since he has a heart condition, but no go.) I swear. Every word of this story is true. So my guitar is home. So Lovely. Tuned it right into DADGAD which it practically slipped into all by itself, being such a lovely thing to tune and so USED to that tuning and played 'Dark-Eyed Molly'. Then 'Darkness Darkness' which was the first Richard song(cover) I learned. (from Ron's great site) I love to play that one. Took a while to nail it. And If you've read this far, Gene, I promise I'll get to 'The Weather' tomorrow, but it's been a long day!
