There were about 40 people there, and Richard was playing and singing completely acoustic. Or is that acoustically? Whatever. He was doing 'America,' and the audience (well, those who can sing, anyway, which does not include me) began singing the harmony. Anyone who is familiar with the S&G version knows how much that would bring to the song. It sounded great, and Richard, who is not one for sing-alongs, really seemed to like it. Then, during the second show, it appeared as though he was waiting for the audience to join in, but it never really happened. He seemed a bit disappointed. I know I was. I guess the spontaneity was what made it so good. The voices just seemed to come out of nowhere, and, though I could be wrong, seemed to surprise Richard. I think the key to the whole thing was that the surprise was a pleasant one, and everyone there, singing or not, got swept up in it. The twist, of course, was that in the second show, when it was expected by Richard and the 10 or so of us who were at the first show, it never materialized. I suppose it wouldn't have been as good, anyway. On Bill's topic, I have never been that big a fan of the version of 'Love Hurts' that Richard and Lucy do. I guess I've heard them do it two or three times. Not bad, by any means, but not my favorite. My wife Stephanie was the one who harmonized with Richard on a couple songs that day and at some other shows. She has a voice like and angel and Richard really thrilled her when he leaned over to her and said "very nice". High praise indeed!
