In my message I was referring to the period before 9/11, when the world changed drastically for this country, and maybe the decade before that sorry event. Maybe we were spoiled then, but I could sure enjoy the music without feeling a gut wrenching pain. Regards, Tom PS: This subject is now closed to this list as far as I am concerned. If someone wants to have a debate over email with me, I would more than welcome it. Please email me at: thuot@icubed.com. Please include in the subject line "Shindell vs. war" so I can differentiate it from the junk mail I get. I promise I will respect your opinion as long as you respect mine. j.lanza@verizon.net wrote: >In the "good old days" the musicians always expressed their opinions about war (see "sixities folk/rock protest songs"). > >Joe > > >>From: Tom Huot >>Date: 2003/04/02 Wed PM 08:42:20 CST >>To: Shindell List >>Subject: Re: [RS] war and more >> >> Hello fellow list members: >> >> >> >It would be nice to just get to a concert and > > >>enjoy the music. Sorry Bill, one feels strongly about things sometimes. I don't usually do "footers" on my messages, but did last Monday, so didn't realize I was re-posting it, it went automatically. To my mind this was a terrible decision and failure of diplomacy. I don't think people should be killed needlessly. I think Saddam Hussein is a vicious evil man and his regime is ghastly. So are others. I will not shed a tear for him if he is ousted. And at this point there are no good solutions. I suppose I hope we win fast and clean and the minimum people die and we get out and the UN gets in and this never happens again. I think this was a rush to war and people have died who needn't have. I think there have been lies, i.e., it is now all about regime change when it was previously about "WMD" and we don't hear about that now 'cause we aren't finding them! I don't think my cousin the doctor in Kuwait who is now patching up people and whose pacifist mother shares my sentiments, will hold it against me. But, I do agree that this is not supposed to be a politics-only list so will carefully delete the trailers on my mails henceforth. lisa ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Apr 2003 23:53:01 -0500 From: Lisa Davis & family Subject: Re: [RS] Dissent >"Support the troops by bringing them home alive, NOW Stop the war". I explained to BIll offlist that I had made that a "trailer" on my messages, but will now delete. lisa ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Apr 2003 02:27:11 -0500 From: B Gallagher Subject: [RS] CAPITALISM To Jim: (Man, where's Phil Ochs when we need him...) Phil checked-out by his own hand years ago. Poor beautiful weak soul. John Denver actually wrote and sang some nice songs. PPM - 'Leaving on a Jet Plane' is one. 'Big Feather Bed' isn't bad either; hey I'm a family guy. To Paul Mepschen: I agree. The world is not falling apart. Who wants a war? But who doesn't want to see Saddam Hussein ousted? And he wasn't going voluntarily. You also quote Ani. (Yes I put a Capital A) 'the path of least resistance is what makes the river crooked makes it serpentine capitalism is the devil's wet dream' --ani difranco-- As an environmental engineer I can say 'you are correct', the path of least resistance is indeed what makes a river crooked. But generally, it takes time. The older the river; the more crooked it should be. Newer streams and rivers tend to be straighter. Oh, the PPM in the note to Jim is Peter Paul & Mary, not parts per million. (OK, I can be a bit of an ass). As for capitalism, fortunately, I haven't had a wet dream in a looooong time. Even while counting all me money - Mr. Crabs. I along with several partners run a small environmental consulting and testing company. We invested our all our savings and didn't take pay for six months, while paying employees. We truly appreciate all those who work with us. We pay well, provide a full benefit package including family health insurance, and have a retirement plan with matching company contributions. We are compassionate. There's nothing wrong with making money, as long as you provide a valuable service/product, don't take advantage of your clients or employees, contribute to worthy causes, and pay your taxes. Isn't Ani a bit of a capitalist? She wasn't happy with status quo and started her own record label. To Pam: Thanks for being a Vet. Nice quote by Dr. King. Hey, I'm playing by all the rules. Am I going to end up like the Grocer? There's a RS reference. I have more for Paul, Pam, Elizabeth (changing your flag? You can't travel with a passport from nowhere.), & Georgette (I do like her TR quote), but my post is already too long. bart ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V5 #77 **********************************
