If this is how you believe that the troops are best supported, then that is what you should do. I cannot set aside my faith and my ethics on the say-so of a government I find reprehensible. Nor can I ignore that there are non-Americans living, dying, fighting, and feeling terror through this conflict. Any response I have to this war must take them into consideration as well. I guess what I get from Richard's music is that he is remarkably compassionate. "I Am" isn't exactly a rallying cry to war, is it? His music and his humor make sense to me in a time and situation where very little does make sense. Georgette deFriesse - ----- "To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -- Theodore Roosevelt, 1918 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Apr 2003 09:03:47 -0500 From: "mlmarmer" Subject: [RS] shindell-list-digest V5 #71 Ron, Thanks for the information on the cello player for Tracy Grammer. The Washington Post did a review of the concert at the Birchmere and they only talked about Tracy Grammer for the most part. They only mentioned Richard Shindell, as they said he was the headliner, and that he did a few backup vocals on her part of the concert. Yes, Tracy was very good, but I think the writer was unfair, not to say anything about Richard's performance. It gives me the impression, that the writer was a Tracy fan, and didn't care about Shindell. This is what the Washington Post wrote on the Richard Shindell/Tracy Grammer concert. All Tracy and no Richard. Scroll down to the end on the link below as it includes other reviews in the area. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A63552-2003Mar31.html As for the Turning Point and the Tappen Zee, I am very familiar with the Nyack area, as we go through the town, twice a year on the way to Maine from Maryland. Used to stop for lunch and sometimes dinner, when we stayed over at the Super 8, next to the Wooden Indian diner or the "Best Western", at the River Club. Maybe someday we will make it a concert there, as I saved the web address along with the many others I have for folk music through out the country. Being at the Birchmere last night and seeing the RS reference to the Evian water, that was okay with us, as, I think, he was just trying to have a little humor, but my American wife works for a national firm, that was once owned by Marriott and is now owned by a French firm, called Sodexho (So-dex-ho), that provides Contract Food service to American schools, healthcare, businesses and the United States Military. Two congressmen in GA and in FL are trying to have this military contract with Sodexho ended. What the congressmen don't realize is that, Americans are working for this company who are the employees, and they are the ones who may lose their jobs and Sodexho is making very little profit, taking a lost on this contract actually, since food service has a very little profit margin. I feel the Congressman from FL ought to know better as he is a Cuban American now and we are glad he is here in the States, and these two Congressmen, along with the rest who signed this bill to remove Sodexho from this contract are being discriminating to others because of their nationality. Plus, Sodexho's American non-military accounts, may take a second look at their contracts, since the US Government is, and that may really snowball into the lost of allot of business for Sodexho, who's name is on in my wife's paychecks and 1000's of other Americans. Yes, congress has more important things to do, then worry about this contract and the renaming of foods with the word French in it. The 59 congress people who signed this billed didn't even read or understand what they were signing in the spirit of "freedom fries". The renaming of the food is kind of silly and childish on the part of congress. Maybe companies in France should stop buying American products and end contracts with American companies, as this is getting quite silly, pitting this stuff against non-government entities that will effect the American economy. The government of France, not the public companies of France, made a decision, not to partake in the War, and companies on both side of the ocean should not suffer, due to a French government decision. So we don't buy Evian water, Sodexho loses it contract, France kicks Micky D's out of the country, French workers lose jobs and the McDonald's Corporation of American loses profits for their American shareholders. And no, I don't eat at McDonald's!! Sorry for this political writing, but it wouldn't of happen if RS didn't bring up the water bit, as I believe it was just in fun, and I have no problem with it, almost like a Jay Leno thing, in a monolog. I write back with a better subject next, the concert at the Birchmere. Please let me know if you are interested and I'll see what we can do. Thanks. (though, I suppose, is there any other kind? :) Hey all, I haven't posted in a while, but thought I'd pipe up amid all the heavy duty war-talk to put out a nice, non-offensive, musical recommendation. A friend recently told me about this band and I have become absolutely smitten. The band is called Hem, and their album is "Rabbit Songs": http://www.rabbitsongs.com If you go the "Order CDs and Download MP3s" page, scroll to the bottom, and grab the song "Pacific Street" then it is entirely possible you will do what I did and scurry to the CD store within hours to buy the album. :) I should say that I am in no way personally vested in this band - I just love 'em. I'm going to see 'em play with Kelly Joe Phelps at the Iron Horse next Thursday (4/10)... maybe see some of you there! Richard is indeed looking to divest himself of a portion of his guitar collection. He has indicated that he'd be much happier if they wound up in the hands of folks who appreciate both guitars *and* his music. So in case any of the pickers on this list might be interested, he's looking to find homes for the following: 1998 Martin SP-00016: Bought this one for the CryCryCry tour. Spruce top, mahogany back and sides. Electronics. 2000 CFox Custom. Cedar top, I think the back and sides are rosewood. This is the one on which the headstock broke, but it's being repaired. Fishman electronics. 2000 Martin D15: Solid mahogany. I've played this one, and it's got a great neck and a wonderful warm sound. Electronics. 2001 Gibson WM-45: He played this the other night at The Knitting Factory. It's a beauty with great sound. Spruce top, mahogany back and sides. Electronics. He's not looking to make a killing on this stuff, just would like to get what they're worth. So, if you're interested in knowing more about any of 'em, shoot me a line. I really hope some of you folks take advantage of this, because if you don't, I'M gonna have to buy them, and I need another guitar just about as much as, oh, RICHARD needs another guitar. Thanks. Hopefully this won't take up too much of your time. I enjoy the music of some of these musicians so much that it is a real distraction to get into war talk here. I also wish, probably stupidly, that the musicians would keep their spoken opinions to themselves at the shows. They can always express their opinions in their music, since they are all singer songwriters. I know ... freedom of speech and so forth ... but I paid to listen to music. I didn't pay to listen to war opinions. I discuss this subject more than enough with my neighbors, coworkers, and friends. It would be nice to just get to a concert and enjoy the music. Ah! The good old days! On a side note: We saw Lucy Kaplansky in Los Alamos, NM about a month ago, and nary a word was muttered about the war. I think she sung the "What's so funny about peace, love and understanding" song, but that was about as far as it went. Great show, by the way. Now if Richard could only make it to Albuquerque or Santa Fe, it would be great.
