It was one of the first times I heard the song sung in that slow, dramatic performance Richard started giving it. The rendition this night gave me the chills and I discovered the song all over again. How I would love to have that version to hear over and over again. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year everyone! First I would have recorded more concerts to get a good take. I'm sure was there an unlimited budget and time concerns, they might have done so... but like a lot of things, compromises have to be made. With logistics involved- an artist that lives in Argentina, a collective band that doesn't normally play together, I'm assuming the costs of providing the engineer and setup for live recording was basically being footed by some combination of Richard, Y/H and Signature Sounds... plus as it was, people here were clammering about getting this disc out sooner. More tape to wade through would have also meant more track selection and rough mix time. And if you'll check the archives Charlie had specific reasons for wanting to release this at the time of year he did (none of which I happen to recall.) (Charlie, Scott, Jim O., feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on any of this stuff.) If memory serves me the Emelin Saturday take was even slightly slower than the Courier version. Wasn't this one of the ones RS had pitch issues with (or that might have been summer wind.) I think RH in it's updated version is an essential track, and while it might have made some sense to tack it at the end, I think it preserves the feel of the sequence of those shows to keep it where it is. I would imagine it was a choice of either the way they did it, or not at all. And that, to me, is not acceptable. (And hell, I usually listen to it at work and in the truck where you don't notice the slight sonic differences anyway...) I gotta side with Richard and Charlie on this one. Jim btw, I think the Kiss alive thing was the audience shown on the cover wasn't the one at the show "recorded," no? Milwaukee, Detroit, Cleveland, ah, I don't remember. Been too long since I cared much... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Dec 2002 08:41:00 -0500 From: Jim Colbert Subject: [RS] dylan and the band; Richard briefly in AG mag > Sometime ago, Jim post-scripted: > > >>who was surprised to not see rg mention one of my all-time favorite live albums, dylan and the band's before the flood! The Rolling Thunder Tour (based on the recordings I was able to get my hands on at the time) was a looser, more enjoyable Dylan than I think I've ever heard. > Actually, I was listening to RTR live here right now, great disc (and I'm not a "dylan walks on water" guy... some of his stuff I like, a few things I love, some stuff I never need to hear again)... but I like the fact that there are Band tracks on BTF, not just Dylan. But to each his own, y'know? The new issue of Acoustic Guitar has a couple pages of David Hamburger writing about being on tour with Joan Baez... he mentions Richard a couple times. Hey, hope you guys all have a great Christmas if I don't post again today!
