With the holidays right around the corner, this is a great way for all of us to add to our CD collection by having everyone on the list provide their recommended choices. Anyone up for it? That said, there are four albums that I found truly memorable, and I'm going to limit my list of recommended listening to just those four. 1) Peter Gabriel, "Up" (rock/prog rock) First off, this album has been in the works since I was in _high school_, and now that I'm in grad school, it finally came out. So there was quite a bit of anticipation. "Up" is more like Peter Gabriel's early eponymous albums than it is similar to his more recent work. It's fun and catchy in places, but still deliciously strange, which is why I love Peter Gabriel in the first place. 2) Richard Shindell, "Courier" (singer/songwriter) Well, you're all familiar with this one (you better be!). Great stuff. We just need the companion video. 3) Bright Eyes, "Lifted or The story is in the soil, keep your ear to the ground." (emo/alternative rock) I recommended this band (which is mostly a vehicle for the brilliant Conor Oberst) to the list before, but let me just reiterate that Bright Eyes is WONDERFUL. "Lifted" is awesome, the earlier "Fevers and Mirrors" is also great. coughKaZaAcough "Lover I Don't Have to Love." 4) Ellis Paul, "the speed of trees" (singer/songwriter) Beautiful! I liked "Translucent Soul" a lot, yet I did feel that it suffered from occasional cheesiness. I enjoy every second of "the speed of trees," but especially the title track. I also feel that he displays more vocal acrobatics on this album, which is always fun. Peace, Love, and Mischief, Vanessa p.s. I went to see The Dismemberment Plan last night--this was the second show I've seen them play. They were amaaazing. They are sort of indie/alternative rock. Despite the name, they are really cute and a *lot* of fun. Not to mention it's just funny to be part of a crowd of 200 people nodding your heads in sync for an hour. Recommended coughKaZaAcough downloads are "What Do You Want Me to Say?" and "You Are Invited." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Nov 2002 09:34:02 -0800 (PST) From: adam plunkett Subject: Re: [RS] Top Albums of 2002 CD's I enjoyed this year: Peter Mulvey - Ten Thousand Mornings Steve Earle - Jerusalem Greg Brown - Milk of the Moon Corey Harris - Downhome Syndicate Susan Werner - New Non-Fiction Dan Bern - Swastika (EP) Cliff Eberhardt - School for Love - -Adam - --- Ronnie de Champs wrote: > Why not: > not in any particular oder > 1 Springsteen - The rising > 2 Kim Richey - Rise > 3 Caitlin Cary - While you weren't looking > 4 Johnny Dowd - The pawnbroker's wife > 5 Aimee Mann - Lost in space > 6 Tift Merritt - Bramble rose > 7 Richard Shindell - Courier > 8 Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot > 9 Chip Taylor / Carrie Rodriguez - Let's leave this > town > 10 Bob Dylan - Live 1975 rolling Thunder Revue > > Ronnie > > > > > > >From: jeffrey c campbell > >Reply-To: shindell-list@smoe.org > >To: shindell-list@smoe.org > >Subject: [RS] Top Albums of 2002 > >Date: Sun, 24 Nov 2002 09:46:58 -0500 > > > >I wanted to suggest we all list our favorite Top 10 > albums that came out in > >2002.
