I was born in the Bronx, live in Manhattan, but I grew up and spent years and years living in New Jersey. At heart I am a cityrat, but I don't take no guff from people who say "So what exit did you live off of?" And that includes my boyfriend, who was under the impression all of New Jersey was either a Turnpike exit or oil refinery until I took him to the area around the Delaware Water Gap. He was just Amazed. Then another weekend we went to the Pine Barrens and he was Equally Amazed. Then I took him up the shore and he spent the whole ride singing Bruce Springsteen songs. But I never hear him crack another exit joke no more. New Jersey is like a little United States all packed into one small space. And ok, so a nun in Puerto Rico could fly. But OUR nuns can change their own tires right in the middle of a traffic jam--WHILE THEY SING. It is true that Shindell doesn't play shows in Colorado nearly as much as he does in the Northeast, but he seems to make it out here every 2 years. He played the Boulder Theater with Cry Cry Cry in 1998, then played in Parker and Nederland in 2000, then Chautauqua in Boulder a couple of months ago. Last year in 2001 I had to break down and fly out to the DC area 3 shows to get my fix. Colorado is a state made up of transplants for the most part. I've lived here since I was 1985. As far as New Jersey transplants in Colorado, I work at a 25 person engineering firm here in Ft. Collins. 5 of my co-workers are transplants from the Garden State. It seems like wherever you go there are folks that have moved there from New Jersey. Do you find many people in New Jersey that have moved there from other far away US states? Is New Jersey one of the States that lost a seat in the House of Representatives after the last census? No offense, but I don't know of anything in New Jersey that I would move there for. I've been to the northern part of the state. I'm not sure if it is in the north, but I've also been to Princeton and thought that area was very beautiful. What things in New Jersey make people want to live there and Shindell sing about it? I hope Uncle Vito doesn't interpret my questions and statements the wrong way. Mind you, I get very caught up "in the moment & the music," so I might not remember everything that was played. I got there very early so I had an amazing seat & the acoustics were amazing. Richard came onstage and played Reunion Hill & Arrowhead. He then played three new songs in a row, which were all beautiful; and as always, had the depth and spirituality that has made me so admire and cherish his music. Anyway, Lucy came onstage and they sang Are You Happy Now, and Next Best Western. He ended with a song that he didn't write and, I think he said he which he had. He has such a dry sense of humor and is so humble. How can you be so talented and be so humble????? Lucy was great but I can't give any details, as I don't know the names of any of her songs. Her band was fabulous. Richard sang a few songs with her and for an encore they sang Dave Carter's song "Farewell to St. Dolores." All I can say is they did Dave real proud. BEAUTIFUL! If anyone else has more to add, or needs to correct me, please do. As always, it left me wanting more, but also feeling very satisfied if that makes any sense.Hope you all are well and Happy Haloween.Elaine ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Oct 2002 14:12:04 -0800 (PST) From: Janet Cinelli Subject: Re: [RS] Re: OK it does have the Turnpike, but still... okay, what part of the Bronx?! a former fellow-Bronxite Janet PS when driving on the Jersey turnpike I am amazed at how beautiful the landscape is, once you get past the icky part. - --- Tom926@aol.com wrote: > I was born in the Bronx, live in Manhattan, but I > grew up and spent years and > years living in New Jersey. Tom Waits had some words about dating oneself: "For all the bachelors out there tonight. Yeah, for anybody whos ever whistled this song (plays the wedding march). Or maybe youve whistled it but youve lost the sheet music. Eh-heh-heh-heh. This is eh.... Well, actually, I dont mind going to weddings or anything. As long as its not my own, I show up. But, eh... Ive always kind of been partial to calling myself up on the phone and asking myself out. You know... (whoops from the audience). Oh yeah, you call yourself up too, huh? Yeah... Well, one thing about it, youre always around! Yeah, I know. Yeah, you ask yourself out, you know. Some class joint somewhere. The Burrito King or something. You know... Well, I aint cheap, you know. Take yourself out for a couple of drinks maybe, you know. Then youll be... some provocative conversation on the way home. And park in front of the house, you know, and you... Oh yeah, you4re smooth with it... you know, you put a little nice music on. Maybe you put on like... you know... like shopping music, something thats not too interruptive, you know. And then, you know, and eh... slide over real nice, you know, say, Oh, I think you have something in your eye. Eh-heh-heh. Well, maybe its not that romantic with you, but Christ, you know! It aint... you know... Take myself up to the porch, and take myself inside. Oh, maybe... I make a little something, a brandy snifter or something. 'Would you like to listen to some of my back records? I got someting here...' Well, usually about 2.30 in the morning youve ended up taking advantage of yourself and... there aint no way around that, you know. Yeah, making the scene with a magazine, there aint no way around it... Ill confess, you know, Im no different, you know. Im not weird about it or anything, I dont tie myself up first!
