(If you can start your thought with "the trouble with you people is..." you're likely using too broad a brush to paint them with!) It's like a lot of things, if you give and show a little respect and keep an open mind, you often receive that courtesy in return. But then I guess us "old folkies" go more for that Ghandi thing... you know, we're just all into that eatin' our granola, drinking our herbal tea, and thinking we can all get along stuff... But if you have a chance to catch Sexsmith, DO NOT HESITATE. This was the best show I have seen in a long, long time, and all his new songs are minor masterpieces (his new album, "Cobblestone Runway," is due out in October. Great band, great harmonies. The man is overflowing with talent. Sexsmith is pure genius. Who cares what he is, really. ; ) I don't. His art is his gift to us. His personal life is none of our business. (I think it's safe to say he's a man who searches and thinks and has deep faith) I think he's more concerned with portraying men/ women in all the many trials they go through in getting closer to god. No matter what the religion. And that's great because it helps us feel it's okay to go through all of those things. I think one of the things he is best at is showing that doubt, confusion, tiredness etc., are not a lack of faith but are integral part of it. I can't think of a single one of his characters who "believes" (Except maybe the girl in "Tune For Nowhere") They search. They are human. In making any particular personal stand, not only would his characters be diminished, but he would be limiting his own growth and freedom to search and change. I think he's not any one of his characters in particular. I think that he's all of them. And more to come, I hope. O.K. I guess I'm good for a whole year now. You know, Truman Capote once said that you can't blame a writer for what his or her character says or does. And really, how is knowing Richard's religious (as opposed to spiritual) beliefs going to affect the experience of any particular song of his as a song? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Aug 2002 13:10:35 -0400 From: andrew Subject: [RS] Honey ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Aug 2002 12:19:41 -0700 (PDT) From: adam plunkett Subject: Re: [RS] Re: Christian Imagery First off, I would like to apologize if I inadvertantly offended anyone on this list. I was generalizing more than I thought I did(I should have proof-read). I in no way meant to make it sound like I have the answers. I meant to write that "the majority of Catholics that I have had personal communication with" not "all Catholics" and again I am sorry. My last paragrpah was badly written and also got me in some trouble. The only point I was trying to articulate was that Richard Shindell's music isn't "preachy" and therefore, really isnt that bothersome to me being from what may may be a different religious view. We are who we are and we believe what we believe. That is what makes us human. I know nothing about Richard's personal life and never meant to imply that I did. - -Adam - --- ptpower@juno.com wrote: > adam plunkett wrote: > > I am 22 years old and have been in catholic > education since i was 14.
