I thought the lady must have said $15 at first, but no, $50! So I'm curious, is it Beaver Creek or Joan Baez that requires $50!!! for live folk music these days? The most I've ever paid to hear Shindell live was about 20 bucks. Ticket Master isn't even involved in the transaction for Ch*@#^ sake! I had always thought that Baez was an extreme lefty, borderline communist. Not that it's a bad name to be called, but I'd say old Joan has become true Capitalist. At these "gouging" prices I'm surprised that I haven't seen California Governor Gray Davis on TV demanding that congress enact price controls for folk concert music tickets. Is this how much the rest of the Baez/Shindell tour has cost? Yah, sure, I'll most likely pay to attend the concert. But if Joan gets up there and starts spouting off some anti-Corporate BS (granted this may be a misconception that I have of her), I'm going to have a problem with that, and I'm going to counter her statement right there in the middle of the concert. Anyway, I hope I'm wrong about her, but $50!?!!! $100 for my wife and I to hear Shindell. Unbelievable. Ahhh, I feel better after talking about how I feel. That was very therapeutic. But I don't think Joan Baez's ticket prices are high because she's a bad person--they're high because she's an established artist with a large and for the most part, financially blessed following. If you consider that a Richard-show might run you about $20 a pop, that leaves $30 a pop to Baez, it comes out seeming not so bad. They both, after all, have overhead and management costs and mouths to feed. It's one thing to espouse socialism or what-have-you, and quite another to live in denial of our capitalist world. These people have to make a living, just like anyone else, leftists or not. Peace, The Devil's Advocate P.S. I don't know anything about baez's political beliefs, either, actually. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Jul 2002 14:58:10 -0400 (EDT) From: vcwills@princeton.edu (Vanessa Christina Wills) Subject: Re: [RS] Ticket prices I know how you feel about high ticket prices--I'm a starving college, er, I mean, soon-to-be grad student, myself. In general, I believe, the more established the performer the more money the concert costs. Baez was very popular in the sixties so that is why her concert is more expensive. (Think early Bob Dylan - she was connected to him in the early 60s.) Unfortanantely, the music buisness isnt all about the performer. All these other avenues soak up money to. As for Joan Baez's political beliefs....I wasn't alive in the sixties but I have read about tha folks cene and, to my knwledge, Baez was more in a peace and anti-war beliefs than socialist/communist. Someone like, say, Utah Philips is socialist. But you can see him for like 2 bucks. :) The issue about making money off being capatalist is a good one. British singer-songwriter Billy Bragg, whom makes you pay quick a lot to see him play, is a socialist and leads him open to criticism. Thank you. If you want more info I managed to google to: http://www.huntingtonarts.org/summer_arts_fest/saf2002cal.htm They have a complete schedule. Lucy plays there Aug. 8th, and Dave and Tracy are this saturday, July 13th. Shows are at 8:30pm. Mapquest claims I can get from Paramus, NJ to Huntington, LI in an hour and a half - but I don't believe it. Depends on traffic, I suppose. Dave and Tracy people might also check out cabinconcerts.com , the house concert home of Tim and Lori Blixt. D+T are playing there on this Sunday, at 3 and then again at 6pm. Maybe sold out, maybe not. Very intimate venue - like being in a living room, really. And, like, hey, Jane Sibbery is play for free at Castle Clinton in NYC on Thursday night, July 11th... if you're not doing anything else. Free! Go to rivertorivernyc.org for more info. ok... bye... I am getting so excited, but when I look at the calendar at work it seems so far away! I also know that Howie will be there. It was a great concert, the price is a little more than I wanted to pay and I brought my daughters, nieces and sister!!! I think that's the most I've paid to Richard but at the IMAC in Huntington his tickets cost $30. Janet Sign up for SBC Yahoo!
