He gave Carol a big bouquet, and to me he gave a big (a really, really big) book on the history of Narrow Gauge Railroads in the United States. Why? Because I love trains, and Richard knows that, and thought I'd appreciate a book on them more than a big bouquet... Oh, no, ok... Richard gave us these tokens of appreciation because as of July 1, Young/Hunter Management will cease to manage Mr. Shindell. Why? Our contract with Richard was up in January (we extended it through June in order to oversee the US release of COURIER), and, at that time, I made a personal decision to stop - either permanently or at least temporarily - being a music manager. At Y/H, we have always used a style of management where one of us is the primary manager of a specific artist (Richard was mine, for instance). I am now in a phase of my life where there are other things that I find myself very much engaged in, and Carol and Kerry's plates are already full with the careers of Chris Smither and Peter Mulvey (and additionally in Kerry's case, Jeffrey Foucault). Carol and Kerry are busy, I am wanting to devote myself to painting and putting on events (a weekly concert series, the annual Fred Eaglesmith Weekend/Roots on the River Festival, some other vague railroad-concert plans) in Bellows Falls, VT, Richard's career is doing well and it is a very natural place for this chapter to end and the next one to begin. We started managing Richard in 1997. Since then he has released his three most successful albums (to which he owns the masters of PATERSON and COURIER); he has regained control of his entire publishing catalog; his record sales have increased dramatically; he was a partner in the highly successful Cry Cry Cry; he has had his songs covered by and has an ongoing artistic collaboration with Joan Baez; his audience has more than quadrupled - - he's now able to make a good living at the thing he loves to do. It's a good time to move on. It's how we were with Dar's career which encompassed another five year period from 1994-1999 (sometimes I think I may just have about a five-year attention span). To me, the time in an artist's career arc that I love is when the artist is barely known, but you and a small band of people are utterly passionate about that artist - and you're converting fans one by one and two by two. In the past few years, I've noticed myself thinking, from time to time, "that's good enough" in terms of concert fees, album sales, radio airplay, pushing to get others to cover Richard's songs, etc. etc. Of course, a good manager shouldn't be satisfied with a member of the team saying "that's good enough." I know what I'm good at, and what I want to do, and pushing and pushing to get an artist to an essentially infinite goal of mass popularity isn't my strength. So, in short, Richard's contract is up, and it's a perfect time for me to bow out. It has been a joy to manager Richard, and to get to know many of you on the list. I'll still subscribe, and I hope I'll be keeping in touch with many of you, and Carol and I will continue to administer Richard's Signature albums for about another five years, so we won't completely disappear from the scene. Rest assured, Young/Hunter Management will continue, although I will be a pretty invisible partner. I've made Richard promise to play Bellows Falls once a year, so maybe I'll be able to drag some of you up to my neck of the woods! But, in any case, Carol and Kerry and I would like to say a big THANK YOU to all of you for being such great friends and fans, and to Richard for choosing us to pilot his career for the past half-decade. With love and gratitude, - - Charlie, o/b/o Kerry, Carol and Charlie (my other life is visible at http://www.flyingunderradar.com and http://www.hunter-studio.com if you want to take a look). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jun 2002 11:28:19 EDT From: LBECKLAW@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: not ready for prime time Do any of you kid-friendly listers (e.g. parents) know of any upcoming RS gigs in the NY/CT area that are during the daylight hours, e.g. before 8pm EST? After hours of being subjected to RS listening in my car (while being shuttled from ballet to play dates), my 5 year old daughter has evolved into a tried and true RS acolyte. I have promised her (besides an American Girl doll for her birthday) that I'll take her to a RS concert this summer or fall if I can find out before her bedtime. Any ideas? I was thinking of New Bedford Festival, but I'm not sure her attention span is ready for a full day of folk without Sponge Bob Squarepants. Before I knew you I had no idea music managers would actually talk to fans :) this might sound silly, but really. It must have been in '96 when I was still on the Darlist and had just come across Peter who Dar brought up on stage. I mentioned him on the Darlist on the lookout for more information about him, and out of the blue Mr. Hunter emails me asking if I would like a copy of Goodbye Bob just like that. Blew me away and was just the first in many incidents that showed that Y&H just isn't like any other management. Thanks, Charlie! I for one have Bellows Falls up on my list of places to come back to.
