The only noise that generally comes from the crowds over in Britain is from the occasional inbred that talks at the bar during the gigs. Rod Picott recently toured here and he couldn't get over how people were actually listening to him and his songs etc. There was no one barracking him like your lady and if there was they'd be dealt with by the crowds before the artist had chance, at least in most places they would. Anyway check out Rod Picott and also Fish records at www.rodpicott.com and www.fishrecords.co.uk for some excellent music and service. Alan, Who do you know who has had Cancer ? Remember them by sponsoring my wife in her fund raising efforts for Cancer research here in the UK. I went to the later (9:30pm) one. I should start off by saying that soundwise, the TLA is hands down my favorite place to hear live folk music. The way an artist can fill up that little room is amazing, and the sound techs are really good at harnessing that. I had no business being at the show--my thesis is due Monday!! But the tickets were already paid for, and I decided to go ahead and take part in a little indulgence. Besides, I hadn't seen Richard since October! (I can't even believe I allowed that to happen). Richard played with John Putnam and Lincoln Schleiffer. He seemed to really be enjoying himself and having a great time up there. He told several stories--the only one I hadn't heard before was a tale of how he "wrote 'Mary Magdalene' in order to piss off the religious right," in a failed bid for controversy and nightly news fame. Anyways, seeing Richard as cheery as he was was exactly what I needed to ease some of my own stress. :-) He didn't come out to socialize at this show--I think this drunk lady scared him. In between just about every other song, this woman would leap from her chair and scream "Make me happy! Make me happy, now!" You think I'm kidding. It was really pretty disturbing. She wanted to hear "Cold Missouri Waters" (which she called "Missouri Water"). Anyway, Richard said he didn't know the song anymore. And she was arguing and screaming: "Yes, you do! The last time you were here, you played it! Come on, make me happy!" Finally, Richard looked up and said, "At this point, even if I knew the song, I wouldn't play it!" Everyone in the room clapped and cheered loudly. We never did hear another peep from the lady. ;-) Richard apologized to her from onstage, which I thought was very gentlemanly of him, seeing as how she certainly got no worse than she deserved, imho. Oh, well. They were playing David Mead's "The Luxury of Time" before the show! :-) Man, I love David Mead. I hope those of you who enjoy good pop music check him out, if you haven't already. OK, here's the setlist, from memory: You again 4th of July, Asbury Park Abuelita A Tune for Nowhere Wisteria America Sittin' on top of the world Love, Before you go The Next Best Western Courier Arrowhead Are you happy now? Wow! Who are all these obnoxious drunks I keep hearing about on this list and why do they keep showing up at Richard's gigs? I have a hard time even imagining these scenarios when they are described here. So far, with the exception of a chatty wine and cheese crowd at a free outdoor show in Palo Alto, the crowds at Richard shows in CA are very respectful, almost reverent. Here's hoping they remain that way! "Courier:" The last verse was sung in the third person "And he'll go back to where he came from, he will deliver each by hand . . . " "Arrowhead:" "Bloody hill," as opposed to "bloody hell." "Fourth of July, Asbury Park:" "Oh, love me tonight, for I promise I will love you forever," as opposed to "Oh, love me tonight, for I may never see you again." Although his intonation on the word "forever" made me think he had just flubbed the line and attempted a save. Has he been changing this line at other shows? Peace, Love, and Mischief, Vanessa, taking a break from solving the problem of free will P.S. Richard talked about Venezuela last night, as well. He did seem pretty riled up. np: In my disc changer lie Duncan Sheik's "Phantom Moon," David Mead's "The Luxury of Time," and Jeff Buckley's "Grace," all mixed together on random repeat mode. - -- "When something is too light and it really doesn't look at things hard enough, well, then it's not art.
