Funny how perceptions vary. IMHO, it was anything but a smallish crowd considering The Rosebud is a fairly large venue, and I've seen hundreds of shows there. Yes, there were a few empty chairs up front, but I would guess there were 150-200 folks there, including the ones sitting in the balcony. I do agree the show was breathtaking. "What a good year for the roses" was [according to RS] an old George Jones song. He commented that George Jones is one of his favorites and that he could be persuaded to sing nothing but George Jones songs. :-) Had the opportunity to talk to RS for maybe 5 minutes after the show.....after waiting probably close to 30 minutes for him to come out and sign autographs, etc. I told him that when he played Pittsburgh last month with Joan Baez and Dave & Tracy, I opted to see Richard Thompson that night at The Rosebud instead. He kinda chuckled and commented that *he* would have gone to see Richard Thompson too. Then he asked me about the RT show saying "He sang right there on that stage?" and I said "yes" and proceeded to tell him how RT did a Britney Spears song that brought the house down. He seemed to get a kick out of that. Anyway, that was the first time I ever got to talk to him, even for a few minutes, and it was really pleasant. It's rare at The Rosebud that an artist gets such an ovation that he returns for a second encore....but it happened Friday night with Richard Shindell. Deservedly so. The set list reads like a recitation of my favorites -- I was hoping for Sonora's Death Row, but *Shades of Gray* more than made up for it's absence -(my second favorite song on Cry, Cry, Cry.) Fishing was heartbreakingly beautiful and I've never heard him perform You Stay Here with so much power. It was a smallish but receptive and appreciative audience of fans and there was a nary a snicker during Mary Magdalene or Transit. Richard received several standing ovations and once had to tell us, "Thanks, but I'm not done yet!" The set list is from memory and may not be in the exact order, and one song is missing. There was an additional song after America, but I guess I was so stunned by his cover of it that for the life of me I can't recall what the last number was. Hopefully someone can fill in the gap. Courier The Ballad of Mary Magdalene A Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress Love, Before You Go Fishing You Stay Here Shades of Gray Arrowhead Next Best Western Abuelita A Good Year for the Roses (or something like that) Wisteria Are You Happy Now? 4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy) Reunion Hill Transit (encore) America (I forget - but I KNOW I liked it!!) Kenny White opened and we were completely blown away by his performance. He was a delightful surprise -- an extraordinary keyboardist and one terrific songwriter. His first song was a reaction to September 11th which I hope will be on his next CD, because I need to hear it again. (During his set, I was reminded somewhat of the excitement I felt back in the early '70s, seeing Billy Joel in concert when he was just getting started.) Kenny skillfully accompanied Richard on several numbers and he and Richard seemed to have a marvelous rapport. His new -- and only -- CD is called "Uninvited Guest" and I highly recommend it. We spoke with him for a while after the show and found him to be very pleasant, chatty and completely unpretentious. He lives in NYC and performs in the NY/New England area, and occasionaly tours with Jonathan Edwards. Sorry this is such a long post, but it was *such* an incredible evening! ~Sue ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Apr 2002 14:05:07 -0400 From: "Plunkett, Adam" Subject: RE: [RS] Re: Pittsburgh show - Friday, April 19th Quick question: Could someone tell me about the "America" song a lot of people have been referring to? - -Adam - -----Original Message----- From: Karen Zundel To: shindell-list@smoe.org Sent: 4/22/02 1:53 PM Subject: [RS] Re: Pittsburgh show - Friday, April 19th Folks, Sue, the song he did as the second encore after "America" [which was my request] was "Beyond the Iron Gate".
