Alan, well, here is the answer I got, but it doesn't really explain how the whole thing came about either... - -------- Judas Priest covered "Diamonds and Rust". Sony released the Priest cover as a single, which became a hit for the heavy metal group. Judas Priest often sang the Baez tune in concerts since it was a big hit for them and gets many requests, so it ended up on some live albums including the best selling "Unleashed in the East." Joan has been quoted as saying she really didn't like the Priest cover...until she got her first royalty check!! Years after the initial Judas Priest release, the lead singer, who brought the song to the group, met and gushed over Joan and the song. - -------- Katrin > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-shindell-list-digest@smoe.org > [mailto:owner-shindell-list-digest@smoe.org]On Behalf Of alan.teather > Sent: Friday, April 19, 2002 10:58 AM > To: shindell-list@smoe.org > Subject: [RS] RE: Joan Baez or Judas Priest? > > > Hi folks, > > A friend has asked the question below. It was wonderful, they did a lot of duets, amazing energy on stage. Just wonderful! Now if you'd add Richard to that... ah, that would be grand... and since we are talking about other artists - let me briefly include a plug for a great songwriter from the UK you should all check out when he comes to the US later this year: Julian Dawson. Just saw him twice this weekend... a bit more towards pop than Richard, but great songs, great show, brilliant way to spend an evening, so go see him if he plays near you! :) happy Sunday, Katrin ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Apr 2002 13:05:50 -0700 (PDT) From: Janet Cinelli Subject: [RS] interview? Well, the interview on WUSB radio station this morning was a bust! For what it's worth, he is suppose to be interviewed tomorrow on WFUV radio station, 90.7. They have a web site www.wfuv.org. hopefully that one will take place! janet Yahoo! So I thought I would point out an article that ran in today's Sunday paper about how Sonoma County has become a mecca for Luthiers. Here's the link, it should be active for a while: http://www.pressdemocrat.com/goingout/music/21luthiersq.html There is also a companion article on supplier Todd Taggart of Luthier's Mercantile: http://www.pressdemocrat.com/goingout/music/21luthiersideq.html Also, in today's paper was a listing of the top 5 CD's sold the week of April 8-14 at Incredible Records here in Sebastopol. Number two was Richard's Courier! (Source: AMG) A basic internet search (if you're familiar with the concept) turns up mentions of a cover of Diamonds and Rust on the Sin After Sin album, which features on subsequent live and greatest hits compilation. Dave, wondering what this has to do with the Shindell list. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Apr 2002 23:47:51 +0100 From: "Dave McKay" Subject: [RS] Joan Baez or Judas Priest > I thought there might be some intellectual music people > on here who wouldn't mind helping with an off topic > question ( as in the subject line) I did. So, I think it's relevant to pass along the following verse: Well, the moral of the story, The moral of this song, Is simply that one should never be Where one does not belong. So when you see your neighbor carryin' somethin', Help him with his load, And don't go mistaking Paradise For that home across the road. Proof of relevance is left to the student. - -Howie (and a ten dollar bill) ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V4 #130 ***********************************
