I've been loving Patty's new CD . . . "Rain" and "Be Careful" being my favorites at the moment. Last week, I mentioned one of my latest fave raves, Rosie Thomas, without having given a URL inwhich to check her out. Here it is . . . http://www.subpop.com/bands/rosie/index.html You can get her CD, "When We Were Small" for $12.00 *including* shipping (4th Class). For those of you out east, she's doing a few dates out your way this month: April 22 - IOTA - Arlington, VA April 24 - Khyber Pass - Philadelphia, PA April 26 - Maxwells - Hoboken, NJ April 27 - Paradise Boston, MA Richard's in Grand Rapids tonight at the One Trick Pony, a free concert (sponsored by the terrific indie station WYCE) at which a hat is passed at the intermission for a local charity (the series is called "Hat Trick Concerts"). I'm hoping to get to Ann Arbor tomorrow night as well. Pat . ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! It's really wonderful--a great one for the road trips, along with Patty Griffin's new one, previously canonized on this list. Also, anyone like Angelique Kidjo's new CD? Susan is awesome and the Botton Line is such a great place. (btw they take email reservations http://www.bottomlinecabaret.com) and the odds are that I will be there as well. ~Reinhard ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Apr 2002 01:31:31 -0400 From: ptpower@juno.com Subject: [RS] Richard in Grand Rapids -- 15 April 2002 Well . . . Richard seemed a little on the weary side tonight at the One Trick Pony in Grand Rapids. It was one of the more unusual shows I've seen of his, in that the show was held at a restaurant. There was a trio of fellows who had (in my estimation) just a few too many drinks -- too many chuckles during (I think) "Ballad Of Mary Magdalen". Kenny White opened the show, performing most of his songs on keyboard. Kenny's got a strong voice and writes very, very good songs -- I bought his CD on the strength of "In My Recurring Dream" alone. He joined Richard on keyboard for most of his set (*). Courier Ballad Of Mary Magdalen Summer Wind, Cotton Dress Before you Go* Fishing You Stay Here Willin'* Kenworth Of My Dreams* Next Best Western* Abuelita* Sittin' On Top Of The World* Wisteria* Are You Happy Now* Reunion Hill* Transit* America (encore) Notes: I got to the Pony fairly early, but the prime seats had been taken, so I got a seat about ten feet left of stage but behind the house speakers. The sound wasn't the best, and although I didn't have a lot of trouble hearing Kenny's lyrics, Richard's subleties were missed by those at my table unfamiliar with his lyrics. His collaboration with Kenny for "Before You Go" was a very lovely rendition of the song . . . despite its out-of-seasonality, it's a great, great song and this particular performance of it was aces! I forgot to mention that he had a couple of Martins that he traded off playing throughout the evening . . . one that was a bit boomier than the other. Because of the way the room is situated, the sound board was practically in my lap and the presenter's (WYCE) station manager had to regularly walk in from of Richard to make adjustments . . . which was too often. I wondered if he hadn't accidentally goofed on the settings for the guitars as the loud Martin was *too* loud, and the brighter, not-so-loud Martin was not loud enough. There were also a few moments of feedback that I was afraid were going to piss Richard off, but he seemed to shrug it off pretty well -- after all, WYCE is indeed an oasis of progressive music in mid-Michigan. Possibly after "Before You Go", someone yelled "the truckin' trio" and Richard paused, turned and asked, "So . . . you're asking for *three* songs?!?" He obliged a couple of songs later, but first went on a rant about the circumstances in Venezuela, a situation about which he expressed his ire with regard to the United States inability to own up to its support of a dictatorship . . . one of the few times I've seen Richard get hyped up about something other than bad sound! (Heh-heh!) He had a few moments in which he almost forgot lyrics to "You Stay Here", but recalled them just in the nick of time. I have said this time and time again, but I believe it to be so, so I'll say it again -- he LOVES to *play* this song!! The constant build-up of intensity is amazing and he just seems to LOVE playing that riff faster and faster . . . stronger and stronger with each verse. As he was about to "Kenworth Of My Dreams" he somewhat apologized for playing it after "Willin' " -- as in, it's not worthy to be played in the same breath, then as he was about to do "Next Best Western", the voice in the audience said (impressing his girl friend, I'm sure), "You've *got* to play "Next Best Western" now!", to which Richard replied with "No, I don't *have* to do it . . . " There was more to Richard's response that would take too long to explain and I couldn't do it justice, so I won't try . . . "Abuelita" was gorgeous, as always; "Sittin' On Top Of The World" gave Kenny a chance to show his blues chops; "Wisteria" always gets me, and the silence of the room was its proper due and added to its poignance. A few months ago, while I was playing "Wisteria" in my living room, as well as "Are You Happy Now?", I was struck with the somewhat similar settings between the two songs . . . both songs ponder relationships as they are tied to the homes in which they were realized. The same thought occurred to me tonight as he played them back to back tonight: "I sat all night, and now it's dawn And I cannot believe my eyes There's garbage strewn across the lawn Where we once stared up at the sky And streams of paper fill the tree That hovered over you and me And shaving cream covers the car That we picked up in Baltimore" vs. "Remember the price we paid It seemed like a lot back then Remember the love we made The day we moved in" I meant to talk to him about that after the show, but my friend and I had to hit the road for home. "Reunion Hill" was nice with Kenny on the keyboard, but I didn't feel it added anything. Likewise for "Transit" -- Kenny hit a few clunkers due to his unfamiliarity with the song (or so I'm assuming). The encore was a nice rendition of Paul SImon's "America" . . . I *did* have time after the show to point out to Richard that there, above him and over his right shoulder, sets an album cover of Paul Simon's "One Trick Pony" LP. I'm hoping to see him in a more conventional setting tomorrow (tonight!) at the Ark in Ann Arbor, but it's not looking good at the moment. Damn!
