I love "Farther In" from his earlier records, but "Slant SIx MInd" is a masterpiece. Also recommend "Covenant" and "The Poet Game" and of course I'll be getting the new one any day now. So no one has heard the new Patty Griffin? ZAS in Rogers' "Night Drive" in my opinion. Along with "Farthur In" Greg Brown just vreated some amazing work ina few years. He worked with Kelly Joe Phelps(he played slide guitar) on those albums and I highly recommend all his work. He puts on an amazing live show. I have not heard Griffin's new one but look forward to hearing it. I also heard good things about it via Ellis Paul's message board. - -Adam - -----Original Message----- From: RockinRonD@aol.com To: shindell-list@smoe.org Sent: 4/11/02 9:44 AM Subject: [RS] Brown Spots I was actually talking about Garnet's new record, "Firefly" but I also recommend waking up to Greg Brown's music as well. But yes, I've heard it, as well as having seen Patty perform most of it at her Joe's Pub gig earlier this week. In any case, the CD, "1000 Kisses," is one of the most incredible CDs I've ever heard. High praise, since Patty's OTHER two CDs, "Living With Ghosts" and "Flaming Red," are ALSO two of the most incredible CDs I've ever heard. But . . . but . . . but . . . none of this will even remotely prepare you for the first track, "Rain." One of the most stunningly beautiful songs ever recorded, and perhaps the best song to kick off ANY album since Jackson Browne's "Late for the Sky." I can't remember any song EVER leaving me in such amazingly stunned, holy-shit, teary-eyed, jaw-dropping silence. By the end of the first verse, it had simply and totally broken my heart, and by the end of the song, it had pretty much crushed my skull. The lyrics alone don't even come close to doing it justice, since the song as a whole is simply . . . perfect. And I don't want to ruin the experience by posting them here. But . . . but . . . but . . . let me just leave you with this: Buy this CD. Buy it now. Just when you're wondering when something will come along to tear your eyes, drop your jaw, break your heart, AND crush your skull, the answer shows up in your email box. These are good things, right? After hearing endless praise for Flaming Red, I bought it and settled down to listen, expecting a Living With Ghosts experience. The memory of almost literally being jolted out of my seat at that opening chord is one of my favorite listening memories. I guess this goes on the must-by list, too. Actually, it was a pretty good article (above the fold, too!) and an accurate accounting of Joan's current "show", imho. Although I bristled a bit at the photo caption "Joan and her band" showing Richard, Dave, Tracey, etc. in a group shot (on stage), I let it go when the reporter mentioned Richard a couple of times as an "up and coming" folk singer. The article credits Joan with giving Richard, Dave and Tracey good coverage and exposure in the same way she once gave a young, scruffy (unknown) Bob Dylan the same. On an unrelated subject, yes Ron I did hear "Rain" by Patty Griffith this very morning and yes, the hair on the back of my neck did stand up...a good sign. Sounds like a good CD. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Apr 2002 22:29:13 +0100 From: Buffy Breakwell Subject: [RS] Still Raining. Not often I'm prompted to effuse about a song like this, but I have to agree with Ron about 'Rain', the first song on Patty Griffin's new Cd '1000 kisses' - although I'm happy to report that my skull is still intact. ;)) It is a quite incredible song - there's no one element that can sum it up, really. It's difficult to put your finger on, but there are not many songs that make the hairs on my neck stand up - literally, as opposed to metaphorically. This one did. The melody, chords, lyrics, they're all wonderful; but their combination, together with her voice that is quite quite stunning, is....well, I'm running out of hyperbole, frankly, but let's just say it's good. Bloody good. And yes, go and buy it. Oh, by the way, I don't even have the rest of the CD yet - I downloaded the song from the atorecords.com site (her new label). But rest assured, it's already on the way. And knowing her, it will undoubtedly be worth the wait.
