I am truly shocked...SHOCKED...that the person who told Jessica about >my Britney Spears poster collection neglected to tell her that I'm her father. I'm confused. I can't seem to figure out which of the three people the last "her" refers to. Knowing Howie (not very well, thank goodness), this is probably intentional. I'm now going to proceed with my life under the assumption that Howie is the father of all three: Jessica, Britney, and the nameless person who told only part of the story. I hope this doesn't cause problems for anyone. Disclaimer: Howie is my father. And my mother. And my second and third cousin once, twice, and three times removed. He's also his own grandpa. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Mar 2002 12:11:55 -0000 From: "alan.teather" Subject: RE: [RS] Re: What tirade? I totally, like, dig Twisted Sister. Your heinous comments here are like a total buzzkill, man. Not! I was wondering what the Boyer post was that seems to be the talk of the town. Maybe it was not on the digest, or more probably, I just missed it. Laura P.S. Apropos of nothing but a subject discussed last week, I thought of two covers that I think are better than the original: Aretha singing Border Song and Oleta Adams singing Come Down in Time. Both are awesome sung by Elton J, but there's something about these cover versions that gives me goosebumps. Also if you like Jeffery F then be sure to check out Rod Picott http://www.rodpicott.com and take every chance to see him. Finally also check out http://www.suzannebuirgy.com for another brilliant S/S. They are good, really good and you can get their records from www.fishrecords.co.uk as well. Unashamed plugs over but as RS hasn't toured over here in England I couldn't tell you of great opening acts for RS could I? It is a restaurant that many great singer-songwriters have played. His show has an opening act of Jeffrey Foucault. Foucault is one of my new obsessions. At around my age(I am 22 and he is no older than 24), he has released an amazing solo debut album. He had his first east coast tour last winter and I got to see him open for Bill Morrissey. He has played with Morrissey, soon RS, Greg Brown, and Peter Mulvey already. Sorry about the unabashed promotion but I think people here would very much like his music and he is opening for RS. This spawns a question. What have been memorable opening acts to play before RS? I've seen many good performers open up for him. The best being Erin McKeown in New Hampshire. I know Dar Williams has been promoting her music for a few years. She put on an amazing 20 minute set. I have seen Jess Klien open twice for him. She isn't my favorite though I do love that song "Little White Dove". The last show I saw a woman named Deb Talan opened up and she was good. - -Adam ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Mar 2002 09:51:04 -0500 From: Tom Neff Subject: [RS] la baez etc Confession: I also used to think Joan was toast, in the sense that everything after DIAMONDS AND RUST (a classic) was forgettable and even pretentious. This was 10-15 years ago. In retrospect, I guess it was a bit of a low point, at least from a marketing standpoint - look at SPEAKING OF DREAMS (1989) some time. And yet she was already doing what she does now, reinterpreting and championing the work of new songwriters. I just didn't get it, plus she really needed that contempo makeover and a good dose of humor. Whether her covers are always worse than the original (if you happen to be familiar with the latter) is a matter of taste. I never "got" and to this day still do not "get" Betty Elders (even though I think I was once told we're distantly related!??...) but Joan's version of her stuff sounds great. No, she's never done Dar as well as Dar does, but that's because Dar has vocal qualities that don't transfer easily to ANYONE. On the other hand, I will stand her "Reunion Hill" next to Richard's original any day: it was the perfect song for her & she nailed it. Having Joan cover a song is like seeing a sculpture you like and ordering a copy made in gold, twice as large. Depending on what the original was like, the result is either magnificent or just slightly off-kilter, but since the result is exhibited before millions with a plaque telling you where to find the original, it's a very good deal. For some reason this reminds me of an exhibit you should really see if you're in the DC area, at the Corcoran, called "Jasper Johns to Jeff Koons." It's a collection show based on some millionaire's holdings, so there are curatorial holes, but the "Koons Rooms" especially will blow your mind. One of his many tricks is to take a cute cartoon object (balloon sculpture dog, mylar inflated bunny, a kitten-in-a-sock clothesline decoration) and copy them at a huge size scale or in an unusual material. "Balloon Dog" is 9 feet tall and weighs 2,000 pounds, wrinkle-perfect in blued, gleaming stainless steel. The kitten in a sock is 8 feet tall, it looks like a fearsome Mayan idol in day-glo plastic colors. Awesome stuff. I know, a digression, but i don't post here every day. :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Mar 2002 18:32:01 -0000 From: "Dave McKay" Subject: [RS] Re: HowieRambles I sure hope there are a couple of apologetic emails sitting in Howie's inbox right now.
