Merle Haggard's "Sing Me Back Home". I wrote individual sleeve notes for a series of eight Townes CD reissues that Charly Records released here in the UK duirng the year [or so] following Townes' death. I know, it seemed a cynical move to me too........ Although Townes' song catalogue is lyrically peppered with "Doom and Gloom", one facet of Townes character that not many folks realised is that he was a great joker. While writing the aforementioned sleeve notes, I asked many musicians who knew him about that aspect of his character. I chose to close Release 8 [the final CD release] with the following story...............[because, frankly, it was the best of many amusing recollections]. Remember, "NY based" refers to Richard's situation in 1997.................. "Finally, while putting these liner notes together, I asked numerous musicians for Townes Van Zandt stories. My favourite comes from New York based songwriter/recording artist Richard Shindell. Dating back to a time before Richard became a performing musician, the following conversation took place in the toilet of, that famous New York listening room, The Speakeasy. Shindell is standing facing the porcelain, as a guy must do, when he notices that Townes is standing next to him. Richard struck up a conversation with, "Mr. Van Zandt I'm a really big fan of your music, would you sing "Flying Shoes." To which Townes replied "What ? Now ?" Through it all, that Texas born gentlemen possessed the sharpest wit. Thank the Lord that he exercised every opportunity to share it with us......." Best Wishes, Arthur Wood. OK, granted, I am _not_ the relevant listmom/dad/greatuncle whatever, but posts like this are totally inappropriate, and I refuse to be subjected to them. We are all big boys and girls here (or at least I _thought_ so). This pro-Baez/anti-Baez discussion has been getting out of hand for a while now, but this is wayyy, way out of line. This post is simply nasty. We do not flame one another here. I mean, heck, when that guy implied that I wasn't a human being because I didn't love "I Am," at least he had the common decency to exercise a little class while he was doing it. Whether or not you decide to offer it, you owe Howie, and the rest of us, a BIG apology. And you're the only one giving this list an invitation to stop taking _you_ seriously. I, for one, am happy to accept. There is just no reason we can't discuss the merits and dismerits of an artist's work without reverting to behavior that would shame most eleven-year-olds. - --Vanessa, blocking your e-mail address and hoping never to read another nasty word from you again Jessica Boyer wrote: >ok, to howie and the other anti-baez folks, i just have one thing to say. >when you have been a nation's icon for 40 years, when everyone in the >country knows your name and your beautifully clear voice, when you have >recorded 8 gold albums, one gold single, when you have been awarded 6 Grammy >nominations, 3 BAMMY awards, 2 honorary doctorate degrees, and the Lennon >Peace Award, when you have founded anything like the Institute for the Study >of Nonviolence, when you have been awarded a "Howie Day" in Atlanta and >Santa Cruz, then maybe you will be taken seriously when you throw stones at >a living legend. Posts that flame other listers are not what this list is all about. Second, this is the Richard Shindell list. It's not the Richard-versus- list. It's fine to compare artists and to state your preferences, but please do so respectfully and let's not let the debate get out of hand. One of the things I like about this list is that it doesn't need much moderating or policing. Please, let's keep it that way. - --Sally sallyagreen@hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Mar 2002 18:06:47 EST From: Pfleary@aol.com Subject: [RS] first hearing richard and comments on joan I first heard Richard open for Dar in 1997 and then became more familiar with him during the cry, cry, cry tour. I bought Blue Divide and really liked it. After SNP came out, I really got the Richard bug and bought that, Sparrow's Point and Reunion Hill. I got Courier and Sonora Sessions when they became available last December. I am one of a few individuals on this list who has been somewhat critical of Joan Baez. I have been familiar with Joan and her music since I was about six years old (I'm 38 now). She has done a lot of great things as a musician and as a political activist and I respect her very much for that. When Cry, Cry, Cry brought her onstage as a surprise guest at their Berkeley show I was thrilled. Most of what I have expressed about her is that I don't always care for her vocals and that her covers of younger, contemporary singer-songwriters tend to not measure up to the originals. I never meant to "bash" her or take away from all the great things she has done in her lifetime. It's just my opinion.
