Not all of us on this list hate Joan Baez. And while I don't consider myself a huge fan, I still think anyone on this list should not miss her current tour with Richard and Dave & Tracy. As much as the aforementioned trio were the highlight of the Town Hall show for me, I must say that Joan had her moments as well, especially on "Jessie" and "Baby Blue." Okay, I still don't love her version of "Reunion Hill" but she does an admirable job with "Fishing" so that kind of makes up for it. I also think the fact that she has done so much to further the careers of Richard and Dar commands alot of respect for her from members of this List. Ditto for what she is now doing for Dave & Tracy. Make no mistake, these songwriters bring a great deal to her shows.. But it's great to see a woman of her stature--and there's no denying she has stature--acknowledge their collective talent so demonstrably. For this, she will always have a special place in my heart. And I still love "Ring Them Bells" a whole lot. So is there a 12 step program for junkies who can't stop playing this one CD in the car, and fantasize wistfully about a reunion? Even tho I've heard both Richard and Lucy strenuously object to a second coming. Let me know if there is help for me. Richard and Lucy and Dar's alchemy is magical. Heh - I think I'm on too many lists because I seem to be getting them mixed up! - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sally Green" To: Sent: Friday, March 22, 2002 10:03 AM Subject: Albums in order of purchase I first saw Richard in Januaryish 1997 opening for Dar at the old Birchmere, and the first album I bought after that was Blue Divide. I don't think I bought it at the concert, though. But anyway, I loved it soooooooooo much that I bought Sparrows Point. And the thing was, I was new to all this folk music, so I was a little startled at the more acoustic sound of Sparrows Point, much the same way as The Honesty Room startled me. I quickly adjusted though, clearly! ;) Reunion Hill came out later, and I bought it immediately - this was back in the day when Charlie Hunter would post info to the Dar list, before we had our own home on the shindell-list. That one really blew me away. The night I got it my roommate was out of town, so I turned off all the lights in the apartment and listened to it from start to finish with my eyes closed in sort of a trance! The thing that startled me then was the hidden track "Sing Me Back Home" - I was so relaxed especially after hearing the Townes song, and I literally jumped up from the couch at "The warden..." So anyway, since Reunion Hill I've bought them in order, including all the various EPs and downloads, and counting Cry Cry Cry. And speaking of the Baez-bashing thing, I have to say this - one thing I think about the type of music I like is that I think people have to see it live in order to get the bug, unless they already really like folk music. The thing about it is that if someone is used to listening to Top 40, the first time they hear folk music it can be so different that they don't want to listen to it anymore. That's why it's awesome that Joan is having Richard and Dave and Tracey tour with her - he's getting massive exposure this way. I totally understand that some people might not like her music/voice/style, but with RS living in Argentina he doesn't get to tour 300 days out of the year like some others do, unless he doesn't want to see his family anymore, and I think this is a great way of increasing the bang for the buck in terms of his exposure. Also, while I'm not a big Joan fan myself due to lack of exposure more than anything else, I do have respect for her. I think it's sort of similar to when Cry3 toured - I think Richard got exposure and a big bump from that as well, as did Lucy. And I do understand that some people don't like Dar's music/style/lyrics (HEATHENS!), but I think the Cry3 thing was a good career move as well. - --Sally sallyagreen@hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Mar 2002 19:47:42 -0500 From: Lisa Davis & family Subject: Re: [RS] I Am Well for heaven's sake, some of us paid our $ and downloaded, so if you want it!!! It's 3,596 kb. If I can find a place to put it on the web for you I will. You can always donate $3 or $5 or whatever it was to a 9/11 fund. Alternatively, if I run Bearshare and you do too, will you find it? They played Waiting for the Storm and from then I was hooked. I bought SNP first, then Courier came out, then I picked up Reunion Hill. I plan to pick up the others soon, especially after reading all your raves. By the way judging from the ticket sales to his concert in Tarrytown, i think more and more people are discovering him. mp http://www.care2.com - Get your Free e-mail account that helps save Wildlife! ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V4 #106 ***********************************
