I really hope we get to hear one of Richard's songs in a movie. My choices include: Nora Wisteria A Tune for Nowhere I Saw My Youth Today Of course, as someone else said, it totally would depend on the movie. I would suggest that the songs that are sent in be as different from each other as possible, so as to apply to as many situations as possible (thus increasing the chances of one of Richard's songs getting chosen). By different, I mean in sound and tone (since each obviously tells a different story). Anyway, just my 2 cents. A couple of years at one of his concerts Ellis Paul was excitedly telling us about how he was called by a director who wanted to use one of his songs, "The World Ain't Slowin' Down" in a movie he was making. So of course that's pretty cool! Then after the movie ("Me, Myself, and Irene") was released, at another concert he was saying again about how exciting it was to have one of his songs chosen to be in a movie. Then he said in a less excited voice..."Then I saw the movie." It was pretty funny. My favorite songs aren't necessarily the ones I think would work best in this context when you consider the danger is in selecting songs that tell too much of a story in and of themselves...and some songs need played through to make sense...a song for a soundtrack in normally captivating, yet you also don't want the music to detract from the visuals and dialouge if it's used during action and not just under opening or closing credits. It's a bonus when you have a few good verses or lines that can stand alone with scenes; remember for the most part a story song will not be heard in its entirity...i.e., it will be playing under and become more prominent at a key scene or moment, then usuallly fade out. Time does normally not allow a whole 5 minute song to be run without interruption. A hook- think the throbbing bass line of heard it through the grapevine, for instance, when it's used in big chill... or a pretty instrumental lead in can work very nicely. I think are you happy now could work wonderfully in this context. I think wisteria would adapt beautifully, between that drop-dead gorgeous lush guitar arrangement and the fact that you could come in and out and still get a heapin' hunk of emotion and backdrop. Love before you go could be interesting too. Sorry there's no revelations there- but perhaps that says something about the previous posts being on target imho. merrit parkway would not be my choice, btw, pleasing as it may be to use under a scene; for me it's not unique enough- if that makes sense. (And yeah, I've gone on record as saying I usually skip it, but that doesn't factor into my analysis here. I quite often skip AYHN too, but I think it could be a great piece to work with.) Anyway, Merrit is a pleasant enough tune, but to me, it could be any collective of talented musicians playing it...it doesn't necessarily "sell" shindell. Now if it led into transit, that might be interesting! Now what Richard song would you want to see turned INTO a movie? jpc ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2002 10:50:24 -0500 From: Jeffrey Kokosinski Subject: [RS] Town Hall tomorrow? Extras? Hi all, I'm new here. Just to introduce, my name is Jeff from NJ. Who's going tomorrow night? Anyone? I got shut out for the Town Hall show, so maybe I'll hike up to New Haven Friday. Secondly, does anyone know of anyone who may have an extra pair for tomorrow night? Or somewhere I may be able to pick a couple up? Does the Town Hall have a ticket drop before the show? Sorry for all the questions, but I didn't really know about the show until it was sold out. And now I'm making up for lost time. Thanks for any help in advance. ____________________ Jeffrey P Kokosinski Personnel Representative LJ Gonzer Associates 1.800.631.4218 x307 jkokosinski@gonzer.com ____________________ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Mar 2002 15:03:48 -0500 From: jim colbert Subject: [RS] courier review Some of you may have seen this already, but: http://www.altcountrytab.com/actforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3954&FORUM_ID=21&CAT_ID=7 jim colbert ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2002 17:23:31 -0600 From: "Kristen Myshrall" Subject: [RS] Movie songs Wow this was a tough one... I also think I would choose different songs for films and television, for example, I've noticed Dar's 'After All' in a couple tv shows but don't think it would work in a lot of films. And in both uses of the song, it's been a character sort of sitting around thinking and being sad and the lyrics make a lot of sense. So I think that 'Transit', 'Fishin', and 'AYHN' would work well in films. Maybe because those are my faves lately, or maybe I just like songs that crescendo so much and think they apply well to scenes. I think my favorite use of a song in film is the Pulp song that plays in Great Expecations when Ethan Hawke paints Gwyneth. That's how I see Richard's songs in film, films about desperation in very moving, pivotal scenes. This would have to be my no. 1 dream job, besides folksinger of course, but Music Director. Just a couple of lines would work well in a "couple" scene where they aren't communicating well. The chorus would really work "Time is passing in the tv light..". I wonder if I'm the only one who likes this song! And I know it's Dar's song but I really like Richard's version of "Calling the Moon". Still here, Janet Yahoo! So in that case, you would want a story song like Reunion Hill by way of example. lisa ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Mar 2002 08:47:10 +0100 From: Katrin.Uhl@t-online.de (Katrin Uhl) Subject: RE: [RS] soundtrack songs > a great song, not played enough: howling at the Trouble yes, I so agree!! I already have a scene in my head for that one... I also have to agree, not sure who said it, about Calling the Moon. As performed by Richard. That would work wonderfully in a movie. though I guess that's not likely to happen, given that it is not his song. though I prefer his version about a zillion time. Another song that comes to mind as a soundtrack song, but unfortunately not a Richard- original either, is Willin'. But all in all Summer Wind is still my no. 1 for a movie. what do you tink about Blue Divide?
