(I picture this song playing over the radio in the background of a scene where the male lead discovers his lover has just flown the coop.) "Next Best Western" (another background/on-the-radio song as 2 main characters sit in a darkened car, doing a 24-hour straight road trip for some desperate reason) "Summer Wind, Cotton Dress" (playing on a jukebox in a dimly bar as a man and woman [married to others] meet for drinks) "May" (hmmm ... can't picture a scene but I just like this song and think it gets overlooked) Jean ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Mar 2002 09:17:56 -0000 From: "Neil Pearson" Subject: [RS] re: nic jones Gerry more or less covered all the salient points regarding Nic Jones, but to add a little flesh to the bones... Penguin Eggs is generally available in the US on Shanachie, and in the UK on Topic - it's a brilliant album and well worthy of investigation, it's easily one of the best 'folk' albums I know of, and really blurs the lines between traditional and singer/songwriter. It's as easy to listen to as Kate Rusby's Hourglass, but is musically much more sophisticated and interesting (she recorded his version of The Drowned Lovers for Hourglass). The previous four albums are held up in a long and protracted legal battle, and the owner of the 'rights' to the albums refuses to allow them to be re-pressed, reissued, or make them in anyway available. It's an ongoing situation to which there is no immediate resolution - they may appear some time in the future, but don't hold your breath. It's a real shame as two of these four (Noah's Ark Trap & From The Devil to a Stranger) are exceptional, and two of the best albums (of any genre) around. The two self released discs, 'In Search of Nic Jones' and 'Unearthed' have probably been our biggest selling single titles of the last 3 years (Unearthed came out in November 2001, and without checking, I think we must have sold in excess of 600 copies over the last 4 months). These go ALL over the world, with good amounts being bought by some VERY big name singer/songwriters, and some well known folk show presenters across the world, and yes, Richard has copies of both. John Wesley Harding's 'Trad Arr Jones' is a great disc, but if you do pick up a copy make sure you get the Appleseed re-issue (rather than the Zero Hour release), as it has four extra tracks, has been re-mastered, and is HDCD encoded. Wes does some brilliant live versions of Nic's songs, his reading of 'Little Musgrave' in London last year was the highlight of any show I have seen from any artist, it was spell-binding - a truly dynamic performance of a great song. If you don't know Nic's work, you really should check out Penguin Eggs first, just read some of the comments on the disc on Amazon, it's a masterpiece (although the guitarists amongst you may be frustrated) thanks and best Neil - ------------------------------------------------- Fish Records Suppliers of singer/songwriter, folk & acoustic music Shrewsbury, England neil@fishrecords.co.uk http://www.fishrecords.co.uk tel +44 (0) 1743 231546 fax +44 (0) 1743 354354 - ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V4 #75 **********************************
