I've technically placed it in the best of 2002 pile... Should we go by actual release date, copyright, or pre-release date in such matters? And should sonora sessions be included as part of the reference, or as a separate entity? And yes, Lisa, I'm with you in the desparately trying to catch up on music I already want that isn't new besides jonesing over the flavors of the week. (I'm sure ron will never speak to me again if I confess that I still don't have drum hat buddah, although it is indeed on the list to acquire. Course, if anyone wants to buy me a Christmas present, hint hint!) And you do need a few solid listens before you can hate something, methinks, although often there are those discs you pop in and they just capture your attention and heart from the get-go. (Aside: I don't think she walks on water - she's much too real and down-to-earth for that!) But anyway, I didn't really get into THR the first time I listened to it, back in 1996. It was only after a little while. Of course, I was still adjusting to folk music in general, having just made the switch from Top 40 and my "alternative" holdovers from the 80's (the Cure, who I still love, and all those other alternative bands back before alternative was mainstream, before brown was the new black, before small was the new big). Anyhow, I think that with many of the singer-songwriters, one needs to see them live before one gets bitten by the bug. By and large (what does that mean, anyway, 'by and large'?) that has been my experience, so I'll just generalize that to include the rest of everyone, something I complained to Tom about doing on the Dar list just a few days ago when he wasn't even really doing it, proving once again that I'm not completely free from hypocrisy! ;) - --Sally sallyagreen@hotmail.com http://members.tripod.com/sagreen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Dec 2001 09:38:39 EST From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: THR etc. Sally sez: >> Anyhow, I think that with many of the singer-songwriters, one needs to see them live before one gets bitten by the bug. << Right on. There was this folksinger who I'd heard on CD . . . gave him chance after chance . . . and he still wasn't moving me. In fact, I was bored to tears with him. Then I saw him live, and that changed everything. The singer? Guy named Shindell. I found We Learned the Sea to be my favorite point on Green World. After All was next. I do agree wicha on Yoko Ono... okay, and one comment on that, a friend of mine who is definately not a Dar fan heard that and quipped "In some ways, she IS my yoko ono."... I got a chuckle out of that. Mostly I felt I would have rather heard the original demos or solo acoustic versions of the songs or something. But then what do I know, I generally like tom russell, he he he. (Token rs content: The sky above, the mud below... man, I would love to hear richard cover that one too. Heck, I think it would make a good movie! I was impatient at first to see this other person, but RS blew me away with "Arrowhead," "Mary Magdalen," "AYHN," and others. Hadn't ever heard of him, and later I thought "He looks a little like Scott Bakula!" but this music - whew! I became so enamored with him that I talked about having a discussion list for him for long enough, and then someone was kind enough to donate space on their mailing list server, magenet.org, which is where the first RS discussion list lived until we moved to smoe.org. (Actually for a couple of weeks before magenet.org, we had a temporary list through the school I was at at the time, the U. of Michigan. Read about it here: http://grassyhill.org/stax/dar-list/index.cgi?i=875383113_sallyagr) I wouldn't discount CDs too much, though, just to contradict myself. When I got "Reunion Hill" and listened to it, I was TRANSPORTED. I wrote about it on the Dar list: http://grassyhill.org/stax/dar-list/index.cgi?i=874203090_sallyagr HA! Apparently the translation effed them up a bit. I'm not sure why. The temporary shindell-list post appears in the Dar STAX on September 27, 1997. (http://grassyhill.org/stax/dar-list and then select 1997 and then September and then the 13th.) The Reunion Hill "transported" one appears in the Dar STAX on September 13, 1997. The one about Richard in a red dress is on September 11th 1997 (creepy date). That's freakin' fabulous. Secondly, how even more psyched am I that I'm flying home this Friday, so I can hear the following on my favourite radio show (CBC's "Definitely Not the Opera") on Saturday: 4-5pm. *We're pleased to present a terrific double bill from two bright lights on the folk scene: the new queen of English folk, Kate Rusby, and Winnipeg's Scruj MacDuhk, both recorded live at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. For those not lucky enough to live Canada, you can listen online at http://www.cbc.ca/radioone/ (it'll be on 4-5pm in each zone - you can actually follow it westward across the country in RealAudio). You can also get more info about the show at http://www.cbc.ca/dnto/ . I would add in Suzanne Vegas-Songs in Grey and Black and Natalie Merchant's Motherland and call it a good year. kris delmhorst registered with a great cd this year. I love the Marychapin carpenter Time*SEX*Love cd.i guess you have to be a 40ish woman to understand the vibe. Diana Krall always puts out a great cd . As for disappointments, I want more from Buddy and Julie Miller. I am a fan of julie's writing and to hear Buddy's playing, id listen to his cds or Spyboy and EmmyLive. I think the Gorka cd was better than his last few and I love the women he chose to harmonize. To add to the "brother where art thou" movement, I love Gillian WElch's cd and wanted more from Allison Krause. It was nice to hear new material from Nanci Griffith and its great music to clean your house to or ride your bike to. Like Ron, the biggest disappointment of the year was Shawn Colvin's cd. She wins a Grammy puts out a xmas cd, has a baby and you get his hodgepodge of songs. its like B side of a few small repairs. I also waited along time for a new REM album. Lucinda williams Essence was a good record and Dylan is Dylan. The cowboy junkies took and odd turn with OPEN. this year i found Ozomatli, los Super seven, los straightjackets, and the continential drifters. Isnt that a new and interesting? what will 2002 bring?. the nields sisters cd, patty griffins cd as for the dar record, if you are expecting a live show. that live show that is so endearing. that is NOT what this cd is. its live versions of songs lined up.I think that a darlive disc could have benefitted from a different direction and contain different content. I would have preferred solo acoustic material and more of a live show feel. It is what it is. I love the men that Lucy Kaplansky chose to sing with her. and i think her record is a solid record. her harmonies make the richard live record. I like the different covers on his cd. i was at two of three of the shows and i know HE nailed reunion hill on friday. Larry campbell adds to the disc and song but it also makes it stick out like a sore thumb.
