In all fairness to *anyone's* music, "2 fairly distracted listens" doesn't give someone the chance to discover a new artist, especially one as lyric-intensive as Dar Williams - vocal and instrument skills have never been as important to my English major/journalism minor (albeit 25 years ago) sensibilities as words but, to paraphrase those Brothers Gibb, "it's only words, but words are all [she has] to take [my] breath away"... I'm in the Norman "Dar-walks-on-water" camp, because I am amazed and awed that her songs have the *power* to take my breath away, upon repeated listening, usually at the exact same lines of the exact same songs every time - - it's as much an involuntary reflex as breathing, but infinitely more pleasurable... or painful, depending on the song... Laura, I don't think you started with the wrong Dar CD - I think the beginning's always a lovely place to... well... begin. I would recommend working your way through her catalog in order, so as to grasp Dar's incremental maturity and complexity, especially in her voice - just as with my own children, I don't have a favorite... because I love them all equally, but differently. "I don't know what [s]he meant to me, I just know [s]he affected me, an effect not unlike [her] art, I believe" - what I *do* know is that, since I discovered Dar's music 5 years ago, my life has not been the same, in terms of friends, personal awareness, and growth experiences. "It's not a release, it's not a reward, it's the blessings, it's the gift of what you notice more" - take the time to settle down with the lyric sheet and some headphones in a quiet place, sans children (not easy, I realize - been there, done that, bought the T-shirt!). And you know, after multiple intense listenings, if you *still* don't love her music, that's okay - for every "eh" of Vanessa, there's an "aaaahhhh" of mine... which, as you said earlier, has just this day been proven on this list (one man's trash indeed... :-) Susan "And I'll act like I have faith and like that faith never ends But I really just have friends..." ~ Dar Williams ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2001 23:12:24 -0500 From: Lisa Davis & family Subject: Re: [RS] Is appointment the opposite of disappointment? 2 thoughts: (1) Am I the only one who is still so busy trying to catch up on the last 40-50 years of music to be able to buy new stuff? or maybe I'm just conservative and want to wait until they are tried and true? Hell, I'm trying to listen to all the blues I never learned. And it's free, from the library!
