(Not about TV Light, I'd CROSS a room to make it skip that one!!! Well except for "I'll do the dishes in teh morning / t his time I swear I won't forget -- honey, wait another 10 years and then see what you think of that one) BUT: >And that brings me to "Mary Magdalen(e)." (Note: I see that on "Courier," Richard finally got his way with the spelling of "Mary Magdalen"! Cool!) I know it's paramount to sacrilege to say so, but this song just always got on my nerves. Too self-consciously clever, for my taste. Lines like "It was his career or mine," "Jesus loved me, this I know," and "I'll not see his like again/ As I live and breathe," make my head hurt. But it makes my head hurt in a special way. In that "Yes, I know it's a good song, but I just don't like it," kind of way. You know what I mean? I think it has to "speak to your condition" as the Quakers say. The clever "it was career or mine" is the classic Shindell joke line (perhaps self-consciously?) thrown into the serious song. But for the rest of it, just change the names and wait another 10 or 20 years. You know there are these songs you hear when you are 12 and 15 and 18 and then you hear them when you are 38 and 48 and suddenly you sit up. Not that this has to be one of them, but perhaps there are just things you have to go through. The point is that withal the clever lines,it's just a story about a woman and a man she misses. And anyway, I think most of us just adore the tune. lisa ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Dec 2001 00:16:29 EST From: LBECKLAW@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: Sing along with Rich Here's a new question for you all to ponder--I'm sure you have loads of free time on your hands what with Christmas less than 10 days away, Courier to listen to, and your 02 resolutions to list. But first... What is your favorite RS song to sing along with (off key or on)when you are driving in your car, at your desk, or at home? I don't mean sotte voce;rather shameless, unbridled, joyful don't-care-who-sees-me-at the-traffic-light-my-windows-are-tinted singing. The one song you think :"Wow, I'm good, really good. Next concert I'm going to ask Richard if I can be a back up singer!" So? I'm big on singing along, though big doesn't necessarily mean good :) Reunion Hill and Nora would be high up on the sing along list. But really, I'm not picky, I sing along to any Richard song :) I'd happily sing along to the courier. IF IT HAD GOTTEN HERE!!!!! alright. okay. I can live with disappointment. I'm a big girl. it's only been two weeks... But I swear, if that CD doesn't get here before the new year, I'm not sure what I'll do!!! :) Katrin > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-shindell-list-digest@smoe.org > [mailto:owner-shindell-list-digest@smoe.org]On Behalf Of > LBECKLAW@aol.com > Sent: Monday, December 17, 2001 6:16 AM > To: shindell-list@smoe.org > Subject: [RS] Re: Sing along with Rich > > > Here's a new question for you all to ponder--I'm sure you > have loads of free time on your hands what with Christmas > less than 10 days away, Courier to listen to, > and your 02 resolutions to list.
