I think they are a great effort and I give them two thumbs up. By far my favorite track is Sonora's Death Row. I tend to enjoy Shindell live most when he plays his songs with no accompaniment or with just one or two other musicians. He and Rad Lorcovic on the piano and accordion and percussive pocket change is my favorite combination. Someone said Arrowhead sounds gallopy. I hear what you mean. I think the electric guitar gives it that feel. I think Rad's accordion accompaniment for that song gives it a "historically correct" feel (Civil War era) and is pretty hard to beat. I would love to hear Richard play it with a banjo accompaniment some time though (still staying within the historically correct realm). I love hearing Arrowhead any and everyway Shindell chooses to play it. And what may I ask is wrong with Boone's Farm Apple Wine, on which many of us (myself proudly included) cut our pre-pubsescent teeth? Of course, we were only preparing our young palates for sloe gin fizz, everclear, and that deadly Hawaiian punch and vodka mix that got us all in a world of trouble. Oy vey indeed! In the interest of full disclosure, I think the RS listers are a very cerebral, engaging, intuitive, authentic bunch. But sophisticated? Snooty? Pretentious? Probably not. Many of them (no names, not even nicknames) are mentally unstable and passive-aggressive. A few are aggressive-aggressive, but only when provoked and under undue stress (like withdrawal from Gevallia coffee or Richard S. live albums). BTW, what do you think of wine-in-a-box? Laura a/k/a/ Grasshopper P.S. Is there any truth to the rumor that Boone's Farm wine is made from embalming fluid? That would explain a lot. I know, I know, silly question. In the CD player, of course! Tina P.S. I really do like your new layout of the CD, it's a great idea for a personal version. I've disabled the preview pane but it still keeps auto-opening these things. - --Sally, afraid of a virus ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Dec 2001 17:42:50 -0500 From: "Cabrera, Mayra" Subject: [RS] RE: shindell-list-digest V3 #457 [RE: Courier] Hello Folks, Just a Lurker popping out to say hello. Am enjoying my new Courier CD and EP. I got into Richard fairly recently--- a friend took me to his gig at the Bottom Line and I was hooked from there. Can I admit that the song that really stood out for me that night (aside from Confession) was his cover of The Hobo Song? I can't tell you how he and the band just made that song sound so true to me. I'd never heard it before( I will not torture all of you with who my favorite band is ;>) )and was disappointed that it was not a signature song for Richard. When he was in Piermont(?) NY, I asked him if he was ever going to record it, and he said no, it was just for fun and that I should check out the Old & In the Way CD, which I had already purchased because of the Hobo Song. I only heard Richard do it that once--- I've been to quite a few shows since then but he hasn't done it again except once as far as I can tell. Boy, if I had known he was going to do it at that lone Long Island show, I would have found away to be there! Well, enough confessions of a Shindell Novice. This is a great list, very educational, and it tastes good too! Now, despite a half delirious notion about no previous album having numbers under thirty-five and it being an inside joke (I tell you, go two days in a row with only three hours of sleep, and see what strange theories *you* come up with), I do have an actual idea. It looks like an attendance count. If you add the column, it comes out to 73. The only problem is, I have no idea what size these venues actually are, so if it is an attendance count, it seems like it could be a bit low. Anyway, it's better than my previous thought. (By the way, if you add together the 7 and 3, you get 10, and if you add the 1 and 0, you get 1. That's got to mean something numerologically.) jeff. - -- I'm sitting here in Dallas, a dive in Texas with an ache like a forearm for the spoon I am peeling back the labels I'm spinning empty bottles on the bar lonely litters the room -- Beth Amsel - -- writing by osmosis http://www.onefreeradical.com/osmosis/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Dec 2001 23:01:24 EST From: L8NiteBluz@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: great songwriters,,,,,,,,, ...............am wondering why gender/ racial differences have to be taken into account when discussing music???? But sophisticated? Snooty? Pretentious? I never said "snooty" or "pretentious," but I'm sticking by sophisticated. This seems like a great group of people to me. In general, people here seem to have excellent taste in the areas of music and coffee so I was surprised to see such scary wine choices. Maybe living in wine country has made me into somewhat of a wine snob, but I also drink things like Lambrusco and even Budweiser when I was a young'n in Vermont. Sorry if I might have offended anyone, and if any of you are ever in this area, I'll be more than glad to take you wine tasting. >>BTW, what do you think of wine-in-a-box? Even if I lived in a box, I would still drink good wine. Re: "The Mystery Numbers": I know they mean absolutely nothing and that I shouldn't even be continuing this thread, but I was thinking that maybe they are the dates of shows in a given month. That would explain why there are no numbers in the thirties or higher. Just a theory. Also, for any other Mary Gauthier fans on this list, there is a new song from her upcoming album that you can listen to at marygauthier.com. It's called Christmas in Paradise. I heard her do it last spring here in Sebastopol and again at Falcon Ridge. Great song and an excellent match for the new Richard music. First heard Mary when she was opening for Richard. Now that the new Richard music has arrived, I'm doing the Calvin and the beanie thing until Mary's new stuff arrives.
