I was also thinking of Prince, Lamont-Dozier-Holland, REM's foursome, Kurt Cobain and Phil Spector (though Spector didn't really write most of the songs we associate with his production). I included Sondheim because he has been enormously influential in contemporary theater. I think there are lots of blurry edges to the way the question is phrased. I included Janis Ian because I love her songwriting, but her influence is negliable compared, say, to Joni Mitchell. In the same light, someone like Dave Carter may be a personal favorite, but as a major influence? That remains to be seen. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Dec 2001 20:25:32 -0500 From: Vanessa Christina Wills Subject: Re: [RS] YAY!!! It's here I want mine! I want mine! I want mine! A professor there teaches a course called "Great Books"--including lots of classics by Dante, James Joyce, Shakespeare, etc. The trouble is, the Great Books list excluded a lot of women, not to mention other ethnic groups outside of Dead White Males. So a whole mishigoss ensued...and as far as I know is still ensuing. It's endlessly interesting to me. The Great Songwriters dialectic here reminds me of how difficult it is to come up with a definitive "correct" list without leaving out important people or offending most . Not sure what the "right answer" is here--just wanted to make my point, in a rambling, tangential way. Laura P.S. Oh yeah: MY 10 GREAT SONGWRITERS LIST Richard Shindell Joan Armatrading Bruce Springsteen Billy Joel Bernie Taupin Puccini (especially Madame Butterfly) That duo who wrote most of Motown hits...Berry Gordy? I forget the set-up, but the punch line was Spike Lee reading the OP-Ed section of the Times...he looks up at the camera & says, "Man, these people are opinionated!". Lennon/McCartney = Joan Baez? I'll go along with McCartney, but, please leave John out of it. Can you just picture Joan covering Working Class Hero? The only omission I can see so far to "greatest songwriters" is Van Morrison. I'd also like to add as an honorable mention David Gray. (I know he's young and doesn't measure up to all those listed earlier (yet), but I think he shows great potential -- give him another 15 years or so to build up his book). How about a new thread on favorite classic Christmas albums? When we were kids it wasn't Christmas until the Harry Simeon Chorale was broken out. They did a rockin' version of "Go Tell it on the Mountain". Also the Vince Guaraldi Trio & Charlie Brown Christmas. virginia (it was 70 degrees in NYC today...I dreamt of snow last night). ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Dec 2001 21:48:13 -0500 From: "Greg Z" Subject: [RS] Re: Courier < I am in awe of this CD. < RG Ron, I'm with you 100%. My top 10 songwriters? OK, these are not the most influential by any means, but these are my personal top 10, the ones I would never want to be without (Alphabetically) Dan Bern Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe Dave Carter Lennon/McCartney Richard Shindell Paul Simon Bruce Springsteen Jimmy Webb Dar Williams and that Zimmerman kid from Hibbing, MN If Jackson Browne's only 'influence' was in co-writing 'Take It Easy,' well, that's more than enough. His role, however small, in perpetrating The Eagles on the planet makes him the Pandora of pop music.
