As it is now, my daughter and I listen to every track, all the way through, continually--it's THAT good. And I was fortunate enough to bring Deb to Huntington to play for Mark Erelli last month. She was outstanding and the cutest little pixie since Dar Williams. Deb Talan is one of the most innovative singer/songwriters I've heard since, well, Dar Williams. I HIGHLY recommend "Something Burning" to everyone on this list. Oh, and Kris' Delmhorst's "Five Steps" is pretty damned great as well. Since I first picked up Sparrows Point a few years ago I've always felt that somehow the song didn't "fit" with the overall feeling of the rest of the disk, it's a little too Country for my taste anyway, and it is one of the VERY few RS tunes that I skip over. ....still lurking in the shadows of the list... It sucks to be one of those staes that doesnt really count to most people. But progress is happening in Montana. In the interest, perhaps, of helping those who may be wondering what to ask for this holiday season: My Top 10 CDs of 2001 I hate putting these things in order, so I'm only listing my top 2 that way. 1. JEFFREY FOUCAULT - Miles from the Lightning Hands down, my pick for best CD of the year. Peter Mulvey gave me a copy in April, I was instantly blown away, and I still listen to it pretty well every day. As some of you know, I'm now working with Jeff but before you scream "You're biased!" - understand that being knocked out by the CD is why I'm now working with him. Many of these songs (which are stunning in their own right) were written when Jeff was only 21 years old. At 25, he's just getting better and better. It dizzies me to think of what he'll be like by the time he's 30. If you do yourself one favour this year, buy this CD. In the words of Bill Morrissey, "Jeffrey Foucault deserves all the attention and accolades he's going to get." Or, better yet, in the words of Katrin Uhl, "This boy's gonna be big!" http://www.jeffreyfoucault.com 2. THE BE GOOD TANYAS - Blue Horse Saw them play in the hotel hallway at Folk Alliance in Vancouver. Easily the most gorgeous music I'VE ever heard in a hotel hallway and I'm still loving this CD. Apty described once as "Iris DeMent, Gillian Welch, and Lucinda Williams sitting on a backwoods porch sounding positively drunk with joy." http://www.begoodtanyas.com The rest, in alphabetical order, for the sake of democracy (and my own sanity) - BETH AMSEL, Kindling - http://www.bethamsel.com KRIS DELMHORST, Five Stories - http://www.krisdelmhorst.com BOB DYLAN, Love and Theft - http://www.bobdylan.com (like he needs my plug?)
