For me, the only PERFECT albums over the years that meet this criteria are: Marvin Gaye: "What's Goin On" Bob Dylan: "Blood on the Tracks" Lou Reed: "Berlin" Dar Williams: "Honesty Room" Cat Stevens: "Tea for the Tillerman" Bruces Springsteen: "Born To Run" In truth, I could not listen to Lou Reed's "Berlin" again without getting all creeped out. But I would define it as one of the most brillant things put to vinyl I've ever heard and/or experienced. The rest I listen to with forlorn regularity. Your mileage may vary. I recently downloaded the song "I Am" and tears came to my eyes immediately. I heard Richard sing this live about a month ago...and was so moved by it. I lost a childhood friend in the WTC and my 6yr old son's classmate lost his Dad. Some of my friends escaped from the towers. This song captures all the feelings of 9/11. Living on Long Island, a day hasn't gone by since Sept. 11 when I haven't heard of someone or something that reduced me to tears, and "I Am" is no exception. I love the simplicity of the lyrics and music. For me, each line brings to mind a small still-life picture of a horribly chaotic event, and yet reassures me of a greater good. On a lighter topic, my favorite album is, you know, the one by that guy. (With love to Gene, who after 22 years together is still amazed that I never remember a song title, ablum title, singer's name...) OK, I know there were no rules when someone first asked about "perfect" CDs, but it cracks me up when I see lists that are 15 to 22 CDs long. So I'm going to throw this challenge out, and no cheating with "I can't choose between X and Y" or "Here's my choice, but here are 10 honorable mentions." You have to choose one CD. One. Uno. Ich. Ein. Mine's still Jackson Browne's "Late for the Sky," because there's no filler (only 8 songs) and it has more songs that speak to me . . . that could have been ripped right from my soul . . . than any other CD that's ever been released or ever will be released. Let the music keep our spirits high, indeed. Go. RG ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 12:51:37 -0500 From: "Gene Frey" Subject: [RS] Don't go with a guy who would make you choose..... Hey you guys, OK, If I had to pick just one CD to keep, a real, commercially available CD, no cheating with mix discs or anything like that, it would have to be 'Out of Time' by REM. Nine great songs, one o.k. (Radio Song) and one grievous error (Shiny Happy People). Those nine are enough. While 'Out of Time' does not contain my favorite REM song (Driver 8), it is a document of the best band in the world at the top of their game, half a notch above Automatic For The People and Murmur. 'Out of Time' it is. I stick with Marty Robbins gunfighter ballads and trail songs. Listen to Grady Martin's (uncredited) guitar embellishments. Listen to the vocal arrangements and harmonies by the Glaser brothers, I believe. The vocal quality of Robbin's voice; the selection- El Paso, big iron, even The master's call, which still sends a chill down my back. The sound quality, while by no means state of the art, is still clean and crisp. I loved this record at age 4; I love this record at age 40. In fact, I just listened to it last week. (Albeit in the box set verion from bear family, with all his western songs. I love bear family; wish I could afford more of their collections.) The mix doesn't even have a lot of extraneous crap going on, you know, layers of strings, that sort of thing. I will stick with the reissued one with bonus cuts though, just cause it's more music. Btw my interpretation of perfect album was perfect to me- one that I think every track is a keeper and one that I don't skip songs on when I listen to it... I can't judge what was in an artist's head as far as what they intended the finished piece to be. jim who doesn't remember ever even wanting to be a cowboy, but did just listen to shoot out the lights (which could have also made the list.) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 11:38:21 -0800 From: Lee Wessman Subject: [RS] Perfection I skip nothing on these: - -Sparrow's Point and/or SNP - -Shawn Colvin, "Steady On" (even if she did just do a TV commercial for baby wipes) - -The Story, "Angel in the House" - -Pete Townsend, "Who Came First" - -Rickie Lee Jones, "Pirates" - -Sandy Denny, "Sandy" - -Jean Luc Ponty, "Tchokola" - -Pierce Pettis, "Chase the Buffalo" - -Fleetwood Mac, "Then Play On" - -Richard Thompson, "Mirror Blue" - -Bothy Band, "Old Hag You Have Killed Me" - -lee ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 15:19:19 -0500 From: "Michaela O'Brien" Subject: [RS] Updated Tour Schedule Ok folks, here you have it.
