Wowza . . . do you realize that this is Actual New Richard Shindell Music we're getting here? First, "Before You Go" on last week's release of the "Wonderland" CD. And now "I Am." Then, in a few weeks, "Courier" is coming out, featuring "Willin'" and "4th of July, Asbury Park." And then the bonus EP -- which I've taken to calling "Somewhere Near Sonora" since I do believe that it will include "Sonora's Death Row" plus some of the stuff from SNP that didn't make the regular CD. Stuff to give thanks for, indeed . . . RG ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 11:10:18 -0800 (PST) From: Scott Tincher Subject: [RS] Live Album update? A relative of Richard's? It also sounds like the subject of a Richard-type song. Deb< Deb, I also noticed the name Shindell on the KIA list from that documentary and have often wondered if Richard Shindell's family has a military tradition given his writing such songs as Arrowhead, Sparrows Point, The Currier, The Things That I Have Seen, and Reunion Hill. Maybe he just finds that war time provides a dramatic situation for his songs. If that's the case, I think it works rather well for him. He has in fact written a song about the generation of men who grew up during the depression and fought WWII. Sparrows Point: "Now I'm 21, and well employed, and I send home most my pay, which leaves plenty left for cigarettes to help me pass the days. With beloved friends surrounding me, and the cold streets so far away. Three days West of Normandy with a rifle in my hand." I'm a Helicopter Crew Chief in the Colorado Army National Guard. I've never been in combat and don't have a particular desire to ever be, but lines like those from Sparrows Point and other Shindell songs send chills down my spine every time I hear them ("The Captain breaks the seal and quickly reads the note. 'On your feet boys. Make your peace boys, and pass those letters down to this Courier'"). Richard, if you're reading, your lyrics connect with me and many soldiers. I don't know if you realize that or what that might mean to you, but I thought you might like to know. Thanks, Bill - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
