It's an hour ten minutes north of Northampton, MA on I-91, 2.5 hours on 2-140-12 from Boston. In 1999 Dave & Katrin came up to a post-Falcon Ridge Peter Mulvey/Beth Amsel show I put on. Bellows Falls is an extremely poor town - it was an old industrial town which effectively died, and a bunch of us are now in the midst of trying to revitalize it through the arts, trying to make a place where all of the economic spectrum is welcome, nobody is forced out. An interesting challenge. Anyway, they're referring to a coffeeshop run by "The 12 Tribes", the local commune. It was called the Common Sense, and went out of business. Now they just grow echinacea and grubwort and such on their farm, and we have Oona's, which is a lovely hangout. Any and all listers are welcome to come visit and I'll be happy to show 'em the town. We run a weekly music series, "Thursdays at Oona's", and I put on a bunch of other concerts, for which I publish a fairly entertaining weekly email. If you'd like to be put on the list to receive them, drop me a line. For those ghoulishly curious about Bellows Falls, may I suggest a curiously unengaging paperback mystery by one Archer Mayor, entitled BELLOWS FALLS. It makes the place sound like a pit. On the other hand, it does keep the Woodstock, VT elites (thankfully) away;-). All the best, - - Charlie PS: Upcoming Thursdays at Oona's: 11/8 Eric Taylor/Don Conoscenti, 11/29 Derrik Jordan, 12/6 Kris Delmhorst, 12/13 Dave's True Story, 12/20 Lonesome Brothers, 12/27 Gooselove, 1/3 Brooks Williams, 1/10 Erica Wheeler, 1/17 Geoff Bartley/Tim Mason, 1/24 Paul Rishell & Annie Raines, 1/31 Mark Erelli, 2/7 Carol Noonan, 2/14 Eddie Lawrence/Edie Carey, 2/21 Pamela Means, 2/28 Denice Franke, 3/7 Les Sampou, 3/21 Vance Gilbert etc etc >> I never thought I'd see the day when my sister Katrin would >> *recommend* people to go to Bellows Falls! :-) > > :) > ah, well, for the love of music... :) > > my dear brother Dave and I had more than one spooky encounter in that little > town when we visited a couple of years ago... but I think as long as you > stay away from that one coffeeshop with women with long skirts and men with > long beards, you'll be fine. > Hey Dave - we did have a good time though! Not all of my concert-trips are still talked about more than 2 years later! and: hadn't it been for that concert back in 99 the now famous "Peter Mulvey at Peter Knight's house concerts would never have taken place! :-) ) and I was being completely serious when suggesting anybody in the area should go visit the town and the concert. You get an amazing group or artists to play there, Charlie, and there's been more than one occasion when, after reading the extremely entertaining weekly installments (you've got to read them for yourselves, folks, they'll put a smile on your early morning faces!) I cursed, if I may quote, that blue divide. This time especially! It will be a brilliant show! best, Katrin PS: I am relieved though that the spooky coffee shop got replaced with a great music venue (same location?). they used the bible for wallpaper in their restroom! how weird is that? :) Charlie Hunter schrieb: > Dear Listers, > For those mystified by the conversation, Dave and Katrin > are murmuring back > and forth about the small town of Bellows Falls, VT > (where I now live). I go to sunny Puerto Rico for a couple days, and who knows what has happened? I guess I better track the e-mail trail and see what has happened to our dear Kristy. And Gene said I was tough. ha! So I am back from Puerto Rico. Happily, it's pretty warm here in NJ, too, so I'm not feeling too silly about actually returning here from the beautiful Caribbean. At the risk of being extremely politically incorrect, I would have to say that my favorite thing about Puerto Rico is that it is chock-full of very young, very attractive Puerto Ricans. whoohoo. The people were so happy--I guess I would be too if it were 80 degrees all year long. On the other hand, I'm not sure which is better--being treated like I'm already a grown woman up here, or constantly being called nina (excuse my lack of tildas) down there. It was certainly interesting, anyways. And anyplace you can get tostones at Burger King is o.k. by me. I also enjoyed laughing haughtily at my sunburnt, lobster-looking, melanin-challenged friends, slathering on sunscreen like it was going out of style, eyeing me jealously and worrying about sun cancer even as they lazed about half-naked at high noon. hardy har har. ;-) On a related note, my friends and I took a taxi from the hotel to the airport in San Juan, and the taxi driver almost got us killed by a Kenworth carrying a load of fuel. The whole time he was just chatting away on the phone, pulling a maneuver that would make most NASCAR drivers pee their pants. It was like in slow-mo and I was just sitting there in the front seat, my mouth wide open with one hand covering my eyes (fingers splayed so I could see us pull closer and closer to the fuel-carrying Kenworth, two lanes converging--us on one lane, the truck on the other), and I thought--hey, if I gotta go, this is as good a way as any. At least it's a Kenworth. ok--that's pretty random. I'm off to catch up with the rest of the e-mails... Peace, V LBECKLAW@aol.com wrote: > Well now you've gone and done it.
