I have never been one who can look at a set of lyrics and get much out of them without hearing them in the context of the song as a whole. I think the first thing that always gets my attention when I am listening to a new song is the melody. Or sometimes, as is the case with Nora or Wisteria or Language of the Heart (David Wilcox) or....... , it is a beautiful instrumental intro that draws me into the song. If a song doesn't have some good musical hooks it is very difficult for me to even get into the lyrics, regardless of how good they may be. I know I am probably missing out on a lot of great lyrics but that is just the way I have always listened to music. OH...i'm a bit late with this story...but since i'm out of the shadows i'll toss this story out there, too...is better TOLD than typed...you'll see why: my friend jennifer and i were enjoying richard's show at the cactus cafe when i leaned over to her and whispered, "i think he looks like a baldwin" (meaning the acting baldwin family -- and i do think he looks like a cousin of theirs :) she looks at me as though i've got three heads...stares intently at richard for a moment and leans back over with a confused look on her face and whispered, "you think that is a toupee?" i was laughing so hard i could hardly explain to her what i meant...and then we both got the giggles and i felt awful because richard was up there singing his beautiful songs and we had the giggles like i hadn't had since i was in grade school...which was more than a couple of years ago...anyway was a great show...wish he'd be making his way through the midwest sometime soon :( had to respond to Tom saying the following: > The lyrics actually > reminded me of Mary Chapin Carpenter's "I Am a > Town." i find this song one of the most beautiful songs ever written! in the top 100 for me anyway...the simple but astoundingly accurate images...i can SEE the town...and can feel it is dying...and although it is a simple song...i don't think that it is emotionally simple...as i don't see it as just a concrete discription of the town...anyway...just wanted to say i love this song... OK...enough of me already...back to lurking. OH...but happy for the Rilke discussion here...i LOVE Rilke! christy "For one human being to love another that is perhaps the most difficult of all of our tasks the final and ultimate proof the task for which all others are but preparation."
