Absolutely. That's also why I added the selection might vary depending who you're passing the songs along to. (And why I mentioned I was favoring those written "in women's clothing" for the one I had just done for someone, reflecting her interest.) And Cynthia and I be at the 6:00 cabin concert, God willin' and the creek don't rise. jpc somewhere near beaver avenue ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Oct 2001 11:08:05 -0400 From: "Susan Koval" Subject: [RS] Venues >Hey . . . who all's going to the cabin concert next week? RonG, I made my request too late, unfortunately. Well sold out and with a waiting list. Has anyone ever gone to Godfrey Daniels? I have left them voice messages and email regarding the Tanglefoot concert on December 1st, and no one has gotten back to me. Is this their standard operating procedure? Sue K ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Oct 2001 11:26:37 EDT From: LBECKLAW@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: The Essential Shindell Funny how I misread this question at first (and the answers as well) to be about The Top 3 Richard Shindell songs, or My Favorite 3. I think the original question (about 5 e mails ago) was actually asking what the 3 essential songs would be to introduce a new listener (i.e. "the unenlightened") to the wonder of RS. My Favorite 3 is actually a much easier question to answer, but in the interest of staying focused: This is a very good question, and a practical one too, since lately I seem to be proselytizing (sic) more and more to The Unenlightened about this Richard Shindell guy and how you just gotta go hear him sing somewhere, even if it's in Staten Island, the Catskills, or other hard-to-get-to obscure places. He's worth the trouble, believe me! It's hard to suggest a specific CD to someone who wants to check it out, since IMHO he really can't be summarized by any one CD or song. After much thought, I've concluded that the wonder and glory that is RS is best summarized by 3 categories under which the songs can be classified: 1. Spirit and Compassion (for the Human Condition), e.g. Mary Magdalene, Castaway, Confession, By Now 2. Songs that tell a story: Cold Missouri Waters, Sparrows Point, Reunion Hill 3. Geo-political songs: The Courier, May, Money for Floods, Abuelita, Fishing I actually had 2 additional categories (this is bigger than all of us), Humor (e.g. Kenworth, AYHN) and Love/Sentimental (Before you Go, Lazy, Calling the Moon, TV Light), but thought that these would best be pursued after the initiation rites, when the newbie is hooked for good and ready for more. Finally, there's a 6th and final category, Really Dark Songs (without hope or redemption) which I believe should only be listened to by VSF's (Very Serious Fans)without any sharp objects or barbituates within easy reach. e.g. Ascent, Things that I have Seen, You Stay Here Those of you who are techies (you know who you are) could easily pick a few from Columns A, B, and C and burn a fabu RS 101 CD for the soon-to-be enlightened listener. I guess RS is bigger than the sum of his songs. My Top 3 faves? That's easy--Mary Magdalene, Cold Missouri Waters (yeah, I know, I know, he didn't write it), and (received and listened to just hours ago) Sparrows Point. And I thought I was a VSF... though I'm not RG, who is an USF (ultra-serious fan). I wouldn't put "Calling the Moon" in the Love/ Sentimental category. I'd put it in with "Fleur De Lis" (religious imagery) with quasi-paganism a religion... but it's Dar's song anyway. Gotta be a quick grab. Melodic, hypnotic, lyrical... Something to instantly cut through the clatter. 1. You Stay Here 2. Summer Wind, Cotton Dress 3. May No. Wait. Maybe it's ... 1. Nora 2. Best Western 3. Fishing Or no ... Wait a minute. It's ... 1. Are You Happy 2. Reunion Hill 3. Abuelita No, no. Hold on a minute. I have volunteered at Godfrey's for many years. The owner is a close friend. An excellent venue and great people, most volunteers - many new - and although they are well organized, stuff sometimes slips though the cracks. I'm sorry you had trouble connecting, but don't give up. Try again. Ask for Ramona and tell her Shelley sent you. She'll take good care of you. Have fun!
