Tomorrow i turn forty. Which may or may not have anything to do with the following. Last night I played in public for the the first time in my life, at the open mic night at a bar in Bellefonte. I did, I think six or seven songs...no richard, unless you wanna count my cover of richard covering sing me back home. It was quite a learning- and satisfying- experience. I did two originals, and I gotta say, I don't have words to express how incredible it is to be singing your own songs, and having people LISTENING. In this freakin' redneck bar, plus, following a guy who just wailed the hell out of a Gibson J-50 playing an incredible stompin' bottleneck slide blues set. (I found out later he was in one of the more popular bands in State college and just came down for something to do.) I opened up the show by saying I was somewhere between scared sh**ess and I don't give a sh*t... told them it was the first time I ever played in public. Then just started playing. I flubbed a few chords, but like they used to say, pressed on regardless. I got a standing ovation when I was done. I think next week, I'll try out cold missouri waters. Most of you RS pioneers seem to know each other by sight, but what about we "newer to the RS wagon" wanna bes? Do we wear a T-shirt ("Dickhead"?), or just a very knowing, rapt, smug expression on our face? Do we grow a beard for the occasion? Please let me know, so I will know a Lister when I see one. I will also have to figure out how to grow a beard... She's always spoken so highly of you! I may try to go to RS/JB tour in New Haven or New London, I think scheduled for Feb. 02. Thanks for the advice re:Musical site. It's great! And until very recently, I thought Tracy Grammar was the star of Frasier...go ahead, laugh. I now know, thanks to my sage mentors and shaman listers (sha-women too) that this is not so, in fact I believe the singing Tracy is a woman. So are they any good? And as soon as you get "Sparrows Point," your next assignment, Grasshopper, is to get Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer's "When I Go," "Tanglewood Tree" or "Drum Hat Buddha." If they don't change your life, I'll shave. And there WAS an ill-fated attempt by Charlie Hunter to design a T-shirt that would allow RS listers to recognize each other at shows. But after a unfortunately less-than-receptive reception to the design (a fleur-de-lis with a tire iron through it), the idea was abandoned (and I think Charlie's just now talking to us again). The issue wasn't so much because of the design itself, IMHO, but rather that a numver of listers didn't really go for the "Hey, let's all dress alike!" sorta thing. My feeling has always been that if we know that we're going to be at a show, it's just as easy to contact the person either on- or off-list and say, in Gene's case, for example "I'll be the very short guy with the peg-leg, ponytail and nose-ring." Although I HAVE had trouble telling Sharon and Vanessa apart. Hey you guys, Laura, with the naivete that this list has beaten out of the rest of us, asked: >>So do all RS fans/listers wear some sort of a "uniform" or visual icon so >>that they recognize each other at RS events? << Well, my suggestion of pinwheel hats never got off the ground, so I suppose we'll have to take Ron G.'s advice, which is something I rarely endorse... Giving descriptions off-list is how Ron G. and I first got to meet. Although my peg-leg was hidden fairly well by my MC Hammer parachute pants, and my manager at the Waffle House made me remove my nose ring, he recognized me anyway. Maybe Isabel has the best idea, suggested by Richard himself - plain black Gap t-shirts. And, Ron wrote: >>Although I HAVE had trouble telling Sharon and Vanessa apart. << Nah, that's easy. Vanessa's the one with the capital letters. Gene F. Let's see he's been playing for fifteen or so years now?? That means I don't have to play in front of anyone til 2013! Nah that's too much pressure! Well Jim totally ruined my plans to embarrass him publically on his Birthday. He'll have to do it himself! Think you can handle that Jim? Happy Birthday! I believe my exact words were "It'll make us look like really big dorks." ;-) > Giving descriptions off-list is how Ron G. and I first got to meet. And on that note, Gene, I must heartily endorse my own method of finding listers at shows. Since I am in the NJ area, and have been for basically the entire life of my Shindell-appreciation, I just scan the top of the crowd for the tallest person there. This is always RonG. I then head for RonG and the other cool cats surrounding him. This tends to work. :-) > Although my peg-leg was hidden fairly well by my MC Hammer parachute pants Right, Gene. Sure. > And, Ron wrote: > > >>Although I HAVE had trouble telling Sharon and Vanessa apart. << hehe. Actually, I've always been told that I favored Kevin Spacey a fair bit. > Gene F. Laura, girl, don't you worry about a thing. You are going to be a folkfanatic like the rest of us in no time. I second RonG's assignment, w/ one amendment. Don't make Drum Hat Buddha your first dave and tracy album. Far better to start with When I Go or Tanglewood Tree (as these are actually mouth-wateringly delicious, as opposed to DHB, which is merely quite tasty). - -- "I still confuse mowing down with getting through." -Jeff Lang, "throw it all," from _Cedar Grove_ ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V3 #334 ***********************************
