Whiskers! Speaking as someone who has worn a beard for the last 30 years of his life, I think Richard looks GREAT with a beard. And it seems to be growing in full and even. Can't wait to see it first hand. Of course, he could very well be copying me as well as that other Ron who is sometimes seen hanging around this List. Beautifully written, beautifully sung, beautifully played and arranged. Thanks for sharing, Patrick. Hey . . . you spelled Donohoe correctly!! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2001 11:39:13 EDT From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: [RS] Hightstown 9/29. Richard and his beard really rocked out in Hightstown last night. Accompanied by John, Lincoln and Dennis, he ripped through standards and covers with what seemed to be an incredible sense of energy and urgency. Are You Happy Now Summer Wind, Cotton Dress Fishing (best version I've ever heard, and Dennis just kicked ass) Reunion Hill (a soaring, powerful version that took on an anthemic quality) You Stay Here Wisteria Transit Calling the Moon Shades of Gray (man, this one SMOKED) Before You Go (the new one) Bleecker Street America Who Knows Where the Time Goes Wings of a Dove Hard Times Come Again No More If I Had a Hammer (with opening act Amy Rigby on harmony) As is usually the case when playing with the band, Richard seemed to be having a great time up there. I particularly like seeing his reaction when John Putnam plays a particularly brilliant lead part . . . he just sorta looks over and gives a "Yeah, THIS is why I do this" kind of smirk. While I really enjoy Richard when he perfoms solo, it's also nice seeing Richard when HE seems to be enjoying himself. Nice seeing Gene, Isabel and Carolyn (all fresh from the Dave & Tracy show on Friday) plus Sharon, Becky & Graham, Vanessa & her a cappella pals. . . a good evening. I was definitely feelin' the luv. :-) What made it better was that there was this guy singing. I didn't really recognize him, he had this huge brown beard, and I kind of think he might have been some sort of lumberjack... He did a lot of Richard Shindell covers in his set. Oh, wait! Now that I think about it, that was probably Richard! Ha. Ha. Guys, aren't I funny? Seriously, though, the show was _amazing_. Definitely one of the best I've ever seen. Richard was in perfect voice, the band was tight, and they were energetic and excited to be playing. They blew us all away. I brought four friends with me, and they were all practically in raptures by the fourth song. (And to their credit, the songs they were talking about most after the show were "Wisteria," "Fishing," and "Bleecker St."--not a word about AYHN). "Fishing," as per usual, brought tears to my eyes. Richard plays it so aggressively these days, and with the band behind him, it's just all the more overwhelming. The bridge is where the tears always come. The song benefits greatly from having the whole band under it. Speaking of the band, to my mind, nothing beats just Richard and his guitar. Nothing. However, the band makes Richard extremely happy, and it is great to see him that way, both from the standpoint of an audience member and also from the standpoint of someone who just really likes the guy and always wishes him well. I was floored by the new one, "Before You Go." The melody is very much a departure from almost all of his other stuff. I was struck by how un-folky it was--that is not meant as a slight, however. The lyrics are amazing and so was the delivery--passionate and urgent. I loved it. I forgot to mention to Richard how beautiful I thought it was. :-( (I did, however, mention the chills I got listening to his version of "America"). Now, to the important stuff: The Beard. When Richard stepped out onto the stage, all I could think was "AAAHH! No! You forgot to shave, Richard! Ack! This is horrible! Please, someone help!" In other words, it was a bit of a shock. Thank God I had seen the pic beforehand, or else I don't know what I'd have done. However, by the end of the show, I'd gotten quite used to it, and now I've had even more time to ruminate. That said, I have whipped up a little list of pros and cons re: The Beard. Pros: - -As RonD mentioned, it is a good beard, as beards go. It is full, soft, and even in color and coverage. Happily, his beard does not at all resemble that of a certain Mr. Gore, at all. - -To be extremely trivial, it's a change. Change can be fun. - -It makes him look a bit more distinctive. - -It brings out his eyes. - -It's a bit sexy, I must admit, and it plays up his masculinity. Beards have a way of saying "Hi. I am a MAN. A male person. With testosterone." (Note: we will return to this point). Cons: - -He sort of looks like a lumberjack. (I suppose this could be good or bad). - -It makes him look about three inches shorter. (I don't know why this is, but it's true). - -It covers up half of his face! - -It's a little threatening. Beards have a way of saying "Hi. I am a MAN. A male person. With testosterone," and that can be rather off-putting sometimes. Especially on someone whom I've always known beardless. All in all, however, I think I like it. I wasn't sure for a while, but umm, yeah. I think I like it. :-) Peace, Love, and Mischief, Vanessa, who doesn't know where she gets off having all these opinions about someone else's facial hair P.S. From the side, at a certain angle, he favored a bearded Russell Crowe. - -- "I still confuse mowing down with getting through." -Jeff Lang, "throw it all," from _Cedar Grove_ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2001 12:53:42 est From: "Amanda Bennett Thomas" Subject: [none] I have to chime in too that it was a great show! I'm sorry I didn't get to meet any of the list folks -- I was busy selling brownies and tea and when not doing that, bugging everyone I know with sighs of "he's so dreamy." I'm glad everyone had such a great time -- my husband and I haven't been able to make as many shows in Hightstown in the last year as we would like now that he lives in PA and we are both crazy busy but it was great to be back with the troops and no show in Hightstown is complete without a trip to the Americana Diner :) Take care!
