I bought it on a whim just after it came out. I think I'd seen his name in Dirty Linen. It floored me immediately. I remember grinning at AYHN, lifting an eyebrow at "Castaway," and then just going immediately to my wife to make her listen to Courier, saying "Hey, this guy's the real thing." The only way I can tell it's still my favorite is to play the desert island game, where I can only have five albums, and only one from RS, and I guess this is the one I have to take. Fleur de Lis, Sparrow's Point ... and then Nora comes along and still crushes me. (The line "We can turn the other cheek or take it on the chin" keeps going through my head as I try to understand how to feel about September 11.) Anyway, since then, each album has pleased me completely. I have not been at all put off by the increasing levels of instrumentation and production, and I can't always say that for favorite artists. (Two cases in point: the latest Shawn Colvin and the latest Pierce Pettis. Yechh. If the songs are up to snuff I can't tell you because the sound is so muddied up.) I think we can thank the collaboration of Shindell and Larry Campbell for the quality of Richard's records, and hope that they continue. Anyway, blah-blah-blah-blah. Why do I go on and on like this? - -lee ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Sep 2001 00:50:59 EDT From: FJPQ@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] Let the mystery be...
