My first glimpse of Richard came at Fez, when he was a part of Dar Williams' "End of the Summer" tour band. Dar sort of had a practice run for the tour at Fez for industry people and press, but she still provided Richard with an opportunity to perform a few songs solo. I don't recall which ones he played but I remember being duly impressed and wondered to myself if he had any CD's of his own. A few weeks later, when I caught up with the tour at the Iron Horse in Northampton, MA, during a longish inteview with Dar in the basement there, Dar told me that I really should get one of Richard's CD's because he was truly special. I ended up getting Blue Divide thinking it was his debut. Then RH came out and I got that. Then RonG informed me that I had missed his true first record, SP, adding that he thought it was his best. I went out and got it right away. It wasn't long before it became my favorite RS record as well. I still feel that way, despite how much I love SNP. I think, personally, SP is the ultimate RS record, meant for Shindell purists. I can find fault here and there with every other one of his records. SP, on the other hand, in my view, is perfect. And you don't know how wonderful it can be until you're listening to it on headphones in a small, practically empty prop plane over Monterey, CA, just before sunset headed to San Francisco. Whew! I'm wondering if "Sparrows Point" is only the favorite of the EARLIEST Richard fans, or whether those who jumped on the Shindell-wagon somewhat later (through Dar or Cry Cry Cry or the Dylan contemporary of whom I do not speak) ALSO consider it their favorite. Or whether it's too folky for the crowd who might prefer the type of arrangements on "Reunion Hill" or "Somewhere Near Paterson." > > Thoughts? > I bought SP the day Josh, who used to own my favorite record store, was literally unpacking it from the box... "hey, is that richard shindell?" "Yeah, you know who he is?" ...based soley on a few fast folk cuts I had heard. At first, I was not as enamored of it as I am now- wait, don't freak...because I was used to a few of the songs in their even starker versions from the ff stuff (memory of you pops immediately to mind.) I'm a big fan of simple, straightforward acoustic stuff, really stripped down, where the essence of the song in its core form really comes through. ( Perfect example is the way he did reunion hill live @ the emelin... walking on the precipice between almost too slow and just ripping your friggin' heart out. ) With repeated listenings, SP became one of my favorite discs, rs or otherwise. And while my "favorite" rs disc changes all the time, this is still probably the one that floats up there most, with reunion hill second. They all have their moments, of course. Life without "wisteria?" I dare not dream it! It's interesting, though, that my initial thoughts on SNP, which was the second rs disc I bought, were, "whoa! too many instruments, too much going on here..." So being out of sequence a bit threw me... for the record, I got them in the following order: sp; C3; somewhere near patterson ( a gift from my Most Excellent Girlfriend, which tells you why she's a certified keeper); reunion hill; blue divide; spring ep. From memory, when blue divide came out I just never got around to buying it- they had a copy over at the record store nearby for a long time; I think I was listening to a lot of blues at the time and it just never came to the top of my necessarily-short must buy list. The cover just didn't intrique me enough to buy it... whereas, SNP or Reunion Hill both would have, based just on the design. Not sure what that says... I guess I'm generally not a big fan of illustrated cover designs as opposed to photographic. (he he he, I musta burned out on roger dean's yes album covers back in the 70's.) jpc somewhere near warriors mark ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2001 08:18:32 -0500 From: "Kristen Myshrall" Subject: [RS] re: Lucy Kaplansky on tour Never fear, your local Lucy-obsessed fan is here!! She has performed once in driving range once since then (I live in Eastern Indiana), and I was out of town at the time. While searching through Musi-Cal, I just discovered she will be in Dayton, OH, about 45 minutes away, this Saturday. Guess what? I'll be at the Folk Alliance Region Midwest (FARM) conference in Michigan! C'est la vie, I suppose. Wish me luck. On Saturday night, I will be number 35 out of 35 acts scheduled to perform! By the time I had gotten through the entire CD and heard The Courier, Fleur-de-lis, You Again, Nora and By Now, I was completely hooked. The songwriting floored me, the voice mesmerized me and the production was nice and sparse, just the way I like it. I think this may be part of the reason why SP is still my favorite CD of his. The production on the others is sometimes a little too busy for my Spartan taste. I also think the songwriting might be a little more consistently strong on SP. I must admit though, that SNP is running a very close second, if for no other reason than the fact that Wisteria and You Stay Here are just about as good as songwriting ever gets for these ears. Paul - who is hoping that Wisteria and You Stay Here make it on to the bonus CD because us Floridians haven't had a chance to hear them live. ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2001 16:36:29 +0200 (MEST) From: Katrin.Uhl@t-online.de (Katrin Uhl) Subject: Re: [RS] Let the mystery be... However, they are now streaming music live 24/7. Sadly I don't have the technology to appreciate this, but I thought it might be of interest to some of you.
