Dang it, ya made me want to listen to Phil Ochs, and that is one thing I don't have on cd! It's literally been years since I've listened to Phil, on my vintage vinyl... the timely, political stuff hasn't worn well (as timely, political stuff usually doesn't) but songs like the ones you listed are stunning. You guys ever read Death of a Rebel, the Ochs bio? One of the best musical-oriented biographies I've ever chanced across. I got it in art school when it had first come out in softcover back around 1980 or so. (Like motorcycle-oriented titles, I find musical bios often may be about interesting people or tell interesting tales, but are as often as not, NOT well written, y'know?) Wasn't Sean Penn supposed to be trying to put a movie together about Och's life several years back? From memory, the power and the glory would have been a good choice too, no? But I really can't recall the lyrics without doing a little research. jpc in state college pa ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2001 12:59:12 EDT From: LBECKLAW@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: covering myself In a message dated 9/23/2001 1:46:08 AM Eastern Daylight Time, owner-shindell-list-digest@smoe.org writes: << Before this "Why Doesn't Richard Cover This Song" thread gets too long and frazzled, it should be noted that all the songs he is adding to his shows all resonate with him in light of the tragic events on September 11th. (I wish!)...And since it looks unlikely that I will have the good fortune to see Richard on this current tour, rest assured I will not be yelling out any of these song titles from the audience after Richard takes requests...The one time I did muster up the audacity to render a request during a RS concert, it was a practically inaudible "Mary Magdalen" which probably sounded more like "Homina, homina, homina" to those around me. Thanks for indulging the journeys of my sometimes overactive imagination, tho. She is >my absolute favorite singer of all time. NO ONE could decorate a phrase like >she could. She died tragically young. Could you imagine a duet between Sandy >and RS on that song? Oh I'm with ya all the way on that one, Tom. Sandy Denny was absolutely one of the all-time greats. She first came to attention in the states with Richard Thompson in Fairport Convention. ("Tam Lin" and "Matty Groves" - what great songs.) Then she launched her solo career with a great album called "Sandy," which includes the classics "Listen Listen" and "It'll Take a Long Long Time" She died in about 1977, as I recall, after falling down a flight of stairs, one of the most difficult losses ever in folk music. Today, her singing style is the direct source of people like Kate Rusby, and virtually all of the great female Celtic singers. I am certain that RS fans who don't know her would be making a wise investment to buy the Best of Sandy Denny collection. I also recommend that first album, "Sandy." I sure wish I could hear Richard sing "Who Knows Where the Time Goes." Just the thought of that song puts a lump in my throat. - -lee ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2001 13:33:34 EDT From: LBECKLAW@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: Richard S. 3 a.m. In a message dated 9/23/2001 1:46:08 AM Eastern Daylight Time, owner-shindell-list-digest@smoe.org writes: << >>I've always found Richard's music inspiring, uplifting, and during the past two weeks, comforting. Last night, very early this morning (3:00 a.m.), I found another valuable use for his music. During an especially wakeful night with my 21 month old daughter, who is teething, I was rocking wearily in the rocker, desperate for an answer from above, or at least from Dr. Ferber, the sleep demi-god. Nothing seemed to provide solace, except for my humming or softly singing lullabies. And so I went through all of the old standards: Brahms, Rock a Bye Baby, Pretty Horses, Raisins and Almonds. Still wide-eyed, but at least not crying. Fighting to stay awake, I started on some other nonconventional lullabies: Circle Game, Close Your Eyes, You are my Sunshine, American Tune, Bushel and a Peck, Skinnamarink...no luck. Wretched and tired, 4:00 a.m., my mind started to wander and it eventually arrived at Richard...and so I "covered" Richard for a while: Mary Magdalen, My Love Will Follow You, and finally I'll Be Here in the Morning (may not be the title, but you know the one)...when I finished the Richard set. the dawn's early light was coming through the bedroom windows, and my baby girl was fast asleep, at last. So, you know how your mind thinks really wierd thoughts at 4:00 am? Okay, maybe not, but mine does. And one of those thoughts was: I'll bet Richard sings a killer lullaby to his kids at night, and wouldn't that be a great CD for him to do, I mean after he records the "cover" CD we're all working on? In any case, hope any of you with young ones find the same success with Richard's music! Rosendale sounds fabu, but it's not to be. In the meantime, all of your wonderful "morning after" concert debriefings are so well-written and descriptive that I feel like I was there, almost. I don't see CT/NYC on any of the upcoming tours (before February's Joan Baez concert in New London, which is probably worth the 2 hour drive)--if anybody knows something I don't know (probable), do tell! I will go the distance, if I can get there. RS always seems to play at the coolest places! I haven't seen him 22 times like most of you, but I've seen him a few--my favorite "venue" was probably Makor in NYC, tho' I did have to stand at the bar for 2 hours--a small sacrifice for a big show. Second place goes to this small stone church in Westport, CT, the name of which escapes me. My first Night Out after having a baby, so I was extra-heady. What are y'all's favorite RS concert venues?
