Before this "Why Doesn't Richard Cover This Song" thread gets too long and frazzled, it should be noted that all the songs he is adding to his shows all resonate with him in light of the tragic events on September 11th. So I think he IS looking for suggestions, but each song suggested should have a quality that echoes how the nation, and indeed the world, is feeling about war and the threat to freedom and peace we all now have to come to terms with. Apart from Jackson Browne, I know Richard has been listening to a great deal of Phil Ochs. I'd love to hear him do "There But For Fortune" or "When I'm Gone" or "Changes" or "Pleasures of the Harbor." Keep the suggestions coming...I'm almost positive he's listening. Um, reading. "Heck is where people go who don't believe in Gosh." --Chuck Pyle RelatinRon ( who has kept his full beard since college because he looked too young without it but now is beginning to get the idea he might have to rethink this since he's inching perilously close to the half century mark and besides it's getting too much grey in it. Just kidding, guys. ;-) I'm really way too poor to see Richard until his next tour in early 2002, but now I'm thinking I should shell out the bucks just to see this infamous follicular growth. hmm - --V Rongrittz@aol.com wrote: > << After just returning from RS's WONDERFUL performance in Shelburne Falls, > MA, I can honestly say 1.) the beard looks very good and 2.) Besides the beard, I mean. Speaking of which, forgive my boldness, but in spite of all of our vigorous discussions re: beard v. no beard, covers v. originals, don't we all in our RS "we are not worthy" awe and reverence (of RS, that is)agree that he could pretty much get up on a stage, beard or no beard, green leisure suit or swimsuit, and read (maybe sing) the Yellow Pages, and it would be okay? Or maybe it's just me. Still not seeing the Mandy P.thing, but trying hard. No one sees Forrest _____the ABC news guy? But over the beard / no beard conversation and the new string of concerts it suddenly hit me how long I haven't seen Richard. It's been so long, it's unreal. Jan 2nd 2000 was the last time. How bad is that?? And in line with the "european tour needed" train of thought that should automatically follow such a statement: European RS-list contingent, yesterday a friend of mine interviewd Richard for his folk radio show (us folk on WMPG, Fridays 9 am - 11 am - check it ot!) and was kind enough to slip in a question about whether Richard had any plans for touring Europe (well, I assumed I knew the answer but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask, or have somebody ask in that case :) ) Well... the answer was something in the line of "would like to go back to Europe but have nothing planned right now". ... oh well, one can hope. :) But, and with this I close my rambling: I will most likely get to see recently mentioned Eric Taylor plus Iain Matthews(!!) plus Mary Gauthier and a few more at a festival in the Netherlands next month. Yeah! I won't believe it until I see it, but, wow!!! (though I'd happily trade that for a Richard show...) Glad to find you all well and jolly despite recent events. I don't post that often, but I read voraciously. Just wanted to say to Laura that the Rosendale cafe is a great venue- small, intimate, great food. (Check out lycos driving directions for map-that's what I use) I try to get there to see Richard once a year. I was going to forego it this year since I saw him at Godfrey's in May and again at Asbury Park this summer. (I popped over to Asbury since I was vacationing at my sister's nearby, just to hear the new song you've all been raving about, but he didn't perform it, unless he did it as an encore. I had to leave at the very end of his set.) Still I wasn't disappointed. GREAT show! I had decided not to go to the Rosendale also because I have recital in Bethlehem on Thursday and in the Pocono's on Friday, so a late night on Wednesday isn't a good idea. BUT now that I've heard about this new setlist I'd really like to get there. With all the flag waving and reactionary rhetoric since the disaster, I've found it hard to find a place of common ground to just be,and listen, and let some of this sadness pass. (Did get in to mass at St. Patricks on Sunday. Glad I went. Was also much relieved to hear Walter Cronkite's views on the Letterman show. Love that man! Anyone else catch him? I digress ) But Richard's show feels like just the place to be right now. And the BEARD thing! Now that's just too much to resist. I'm sure he's absolutely adorable! (Do you think he'd let me pet him?) Now I'm getting silly. Sorry, it's late. Still up printing out recital programs. Anyway, now I'm thinking I'll go, maybe rent a room close by to get a good night's sleep. So Laura, maybe I'll see you there if you are still going. Email me privately if you'd like to meet somewhere. God Bless Shelley "If they should ask, 'What is the evidence of the father within you?' Say to them, 'It is motion and rest'. "---J. Accompanied on stage by Greg Anderson, Richard opened with Bleecker Street. It was a beautiful rendition of a song I've always loved - and was particularly poignant in light of recent events. Richard said he felt homesick for the first time in Argentina after the terrorist attacks, and longed to be home. He shared that he had spent a lot of time blasting his stereo seeking some solace. Next was Out Beyond the Iron Gate, then Blue Divide, then Fishing and then a Sandy Denny(?) tune called Who Knows Where the Time Goes i think. (forgive me on some of these covers) Then a woman named Lisa Guthrie(?) joined Richard and Greg onstage to play violin. They launched into a spirited Are You Happy Now, then You Stay Here. Of course, it would have been criminal to let a real live violin accompanist depart the stage without doing Reunion HIll, which they did. i looked up during the last verse, and noticed that my wife wasn't the only one with tears rolling down her cheeks. I hope Richard appreciates how powerful and moving we all find his thoughtful, poetic lyrics and masterful playing. i brought my mother-in-law along tonight too, having no idea what her reaction would be. She was i think overwhelmed by Richard's crafty musicianship and evocative songwriting - - as i have always been. After the audience recomposed itself, the two musicians on stage with Richard departed, and he launched into Somewhere Near Paterson. At the conclusion of that, he looked up and asked "any requests?" Now, i have thought of how i would respond to that query posed at a show for years, and never had the opportunity. but first, a little background........ Im an ER nurse at a large academic medical center in Boston. For 10 years, ive been involved at various levels in EMS and firefighting. I started this in the town i grew up in in NJ, 40 mins from Manhattan. After that , i worked for various agencies and municipalities in NH. I had the priviledge to befriend and ride to some calls and spend some time in the firehouses of colleagues in FDNY, notably ladder 5, which is one of the crushed pieces of apparatus you see being removed from the rubble in the news photos. That unit lost a good portion of its roster that day. My medical center sent several colleagues to NY as part of the support effort after the attacks. For a short time, I thought I might be deployed as part of the relief effort. Like many of us, i have had strong, ambiguous and conflicted emotions about recent events. I hadnt planned on going to tonights show initially - i had other commitments. I thought i would catch Richard next week when he returns to NH and treat myself as a present for my 30th birthday. but i havent catharsized or healed at all so far - and somehow i knew i need to go tonight. For years i have always said that if i had the chance to make a request i would ask for Nora or Sparrows Point..... but sitting in the front row tonight - i reflexively blurted out "fleur-de-lis" amid shouts of Spring, Wisteria & others.....Richard listened contemplatively for a few more seconds then asked for quiet, saying he "had a winner" I closed my eyes and turned myself inwards as the first strains of fleur-de-lis hit my ears...... I was as moved by Richard playing that song tonight as i ever have been by a piece of music. Im not sure i can adequately explain why- but it worked, and it was perfect. We all have our reasons for being on this list and we all derive different things from Richard's gift of his words and music to the world. I just hope he appreciates what they can do and the power they have. After that it was Calling the Moon, America, Hard Times Come Again No More(?), then closing with If I Had A Hammer. The encore was a beautiful song that Richard said was new, he called it a " Christmas tune" titled maybe Love? cant describe, i was busy appreciating it the first time i heard it. hopefully you all will soon as well. I've been on this list for years, and been to lots of Richard performances, dating back to the release of "when october goes" when i was fortunate enough to discover him. I rarely contribute anything more than set lists - so thanks for indulging me.... Jim ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V3 #316 ***********************************
