It's pretty close cropped and he claims it was only 1 days growth (yeah, right!) but it was most definitely a beard. I'm not an expert on beards, but it covered his face from the sideburns on down. It was as though he just let it grow. He sure looked different. Not quite like Al Gore, though! Sorry, the attachment didn't work, so I'm sending the poem so you can actually read it. Sorry about that. > Ron An American Poem I've never realized till now how much I truly do love my country. never really thought of why I should. never really had a reason to unify with the school by dressing in red, white, and blue, never really had a reason to wave a small plastic flag from the car antenna, or write "USA, MOFO'S!" in soap on the window. But now I do. I feel like a little girl growing up in the forties, talking about the war with her friends in a cardboard box "bomb shelter" in the basement, eyes big and incredulous as planets in the dark. And in a sense, that's what I am, but it's not the forties, it's the millennium, and if someone told me that within the first full week of my senior year in High School I'd be worrying about war I wouldn't have believed them. But it's real, and it can't be forgotten, and everyone is sad and furious and we're out to get Bin Laden and the president mentions steel and how strong the foundation of our country is, how ridiculous they must have been to think they could have gotten away with this. And I think of America's history, the pure soil we started on, now the strongest of all. And the souls of those who died in this wonderful, wonderful nation that are now pouring into the gates of heaven, and I know we're gonna take care of the ones who did this, and I've never been prouder of my country. --Adriana DiGennaro ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 08:18:22 -0700 From: jim colbert Subject: [RS] stan rogers? > A Stan Rogers Song (Not sure of the title) Anyone @ the town crier show know for sure what this was? I'm quite intrigued. (He predicted this @ Godfrey Daniels, btw...said he wanted to make an album of shanties with James Keelaghan...) Matter of fact, I'm listening to between the breaks...live even as i type this. I'm a little torn on the idea of so many covers... and I know it's an unusual time, etc. Actually, I love to hear some of the diversity in covers rs comes up with. (he's definately made some wonderful choices here.) It also shows you his influences and what music is important to him. But most of us were drawn to him for his exquisite originals. But hmm, so many covers...maybe you should get the tape rolling, Charlie- sounds like good fodder for an ep or something down the road! Or maybe a "cover girl, too" disc of covers? jim in a very foggy state college pa ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 08:31:18 EDT From: RockinRonD@aol.com Subject: [RS] Patriot Games Sheesh! EVERYONE knows that CBS 60 Minutes anchor Steve Kroft and Richard Shindell were separated at birth! http://www.cbsnews.com/now/story/0,1597,13544-412,00.shtml You can all thank me later for clearing up this "Richard Looks Like" thread. By the way, I got a look at some of the newly inspirational songs Richard is planning to sing on this new leg of his tour in the Northeast. It's going to be worth driving a few extra miles just to hear him cover some of these amazing tunes that most of us will know and love. One I've suggested is Jackson Browne's "Before The Deluge"--a song Richard's been listening to over and over since Septmeber 11th. And though the song was written for piano, I would imagine Richard could do an amazing job with it. Ditto for "For Everyman." We'll see. Not too many writin' 'em like that anymore. I just can't believe I didn't even know about it. I guess it says alot about the lack of advertising or promotion done by The Brokerage--the venue where he played. Geez. And I didn't do a damned thing last Wednesday night except fall asleep right after Titus. Hrrumph! I want to vomit. Glenn, Isabel, did you know about this show? Were you there? I just wanted to add that the whole show was a VERY inspiring and inspired performance. I think this was my 9th solo show of Richard's, all in the past couple of years, and I've never seen him play and sing with more passion. He said he had been listening to a lot of music in the past week or so. Richard really wanted to, maybe even needed to play these songs, and they came across that way. The band (John Putnam - guitar, Denny McDermott - drums, Greg Anderson? - bass) was excellent. When did they practice these songs? John Putnam was particularly on with his fills, solos and these sort of volume swells he was doing. The Stan Rogers song was about raising a ship again, called the Mary Elizabeth Carter, or something like that. It was great. Iron Gate was done with the band, resembling the cheesier album version more than his solo versions, and was a lot of fun. Wisteria was the only encore, and Richard had blown out his voice somewhat by then, but it was still beautiful. We didn't notice him drinking anything like water or beer up to that point for some reason. It's probably good he stopped after that, to save his voice for upcoming nights. Finally hearing "Blue Divide" would have been enough, but throwing "Calling the Moon" and all these others in too sure worked for me. The beard looks great. Heck, even from the above list of 15 songs from the Towne Crier, seven are Richard originals, two others ("Missouri" and "Moon") are songs from his CDs, and another ("Four Green Fields") is a song he's covered before. I'm only speaking for myself here (ok, I've seen him over 40 times, but who's counting?) but I can live without hearing "Summer Wind, Cotton Dress" or "Fishing" or "Transit" or "The Next Best Western" for a while. And for those of you who can't, they'll all be on the live CD. Additionally, maybe immersing himself in the music he loves will also inspire him to do some writing, too. As far as I'm concerned, this is nothing but a GREAT thing, and it makes me even MORE excited to see him next month.
