Hey you guys, Ron G noted: >>maybe he'll even trot out "The Weather," which I consider to be pretty >>uplifting. And we know that Gene can sing along with it. << OK, I'll say it before Isabel does. I may know the words, but that does not mean that I can sing. I mean, I can sing, of course, but it doesn't mean that I should. At least not in public. I would, however, smile and nod my head approximately in time with the music. Ah, Bach. BTW, someone (not on the list) had said to me that "Tune For Nowhere" was similar to a hymn. On the LIVE RHYMIN CD, right before "America" someone from the audience shouts out "Say a few words". Paul Simon says "Say a few words. Well. Let's hope that we continue... to live". Does anyone know where that is, and how far it might be from Fairfield County, CT? Can't go to Town Crier tonight, regrettably. Life intrudes. It sounds like this round of performances will be more wonderful than usual...which makes me all the sadder for missing them. :-( To those lucky ones who are going to see Richard this next week or two--enjoy! I'm curious if Slaid Cleaves made it out to his Long Island gig last night. I *think* it was last night (Wednesday). He just finished a run through California (we caught him up in Trinidad, CA at a friend's house concert, and locally in Santa Cruz at a benefit) and he was scheduled to fly out the beginning of this week. Reason I ask: In light of last week's events, Slaid added a couple of verses to Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land". He performed this in Santa Cruz, and you couldn't help but well up teary-eyed, then sing along on the chorus (a very "you had to be there" moment"). I think Slaid said best what we were all feeling. There are probably good reasons for and against, but I was wondering if he played this last night in Long Island. I'd ruin it by just spitting out the new lyrics. If you'd like to hear it, KPIG radio (www.kpig.com) has an MP3 posted on their web site. And for you guitar players out there, I have the chords and lyrics available if you want to play it. Lemme know. I have no idea whether he played or not. I did get to see Jimmy LaFave this past sunday and he also played "This Land is Your Land" and "God BLess America" but towards the end, thank God. I don't think I could've lasted if he did that up front. HOpefully, Richard won't do the patriotic songs too early. People do need the distraction of normalcy. Unfortunately, a brutal reminder, I had to see the "new" skyline on the way to the concert and on the way home. A sobering reality. The choir sang a >hymn which was clearly the melody SImon used in "American Tune" -- does >anyone happen to know which hymn it is? Well the main section of the melody is originally taken from Bach's 'St. Matthew Passion' - someone turned it into a hymn much later on, a la Holst's 'Jupiter' from The Planets turning into 'I vow to thee my country'. Except that, actually, only a small section of 'American Tune' is based on Bach's melody, but it's the first few lines which is probably why your ears pricked up. Richard, now sporting a new beard played a varied assortment of tunes. It definitely was not a typical RS show (at least for me). Here's what he played (at least what I remember & not in any particular order): Bleecker Street (Simon & Garfunkel) America (Simon & Garfunkel) Reunion Hill Four Green Fields (Tommy Makem) Tune For Nowhere Beyond The Iron Gate Wisteria (Encore) Blue Divide If I Had A Hammer Who Knows Where The Time Goes Mary Magdalene Cold Missouri Waters Calling The Moon A Stan Rogers Song (Not sure of the title) You Stay Here There were several others including other covers. I just can't remember the rest. Richard had a full band with him including John Putnam on guitar. Opener Amy Rigby also helped Richard on background vocals as did special guest Cathy Ryan. Richard stated that he had been listening to a lot of different music the past week and wanted to play what he had been listening to. I didn't mind the covers but I would have preferred to hear a few more of Richard's own tunes. In any event, it was a good show and the crowd did seem to enjoy it. Perhaps someone else who attended can complete the set list. Arno ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 00:58:50 -0400 From: "Norman A. I love the Jonatha Brooke cover too. It sounds like there were a good number of classic RS songs including Lisa's "Tune for Nowhere". I think I would have just balled if I heard "Wisteria", especially as the encore.
